Hard drive problem?

Ok here it goes, this is my first post here. Anyway, the problem is with my hard drive. The other night the hard drive started making some funky noises that i never heard before and then system just locked up. Turned the system off and booted up fine. Then a couple days later started computer up and it made that funky noise over and over a few times during startup and at the bottom of the screen it said "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". Could not get it to boot up after that. So I called Micron technical support and we tried to do a few things and got nothing. They are sending me a new hard drive. So what I did this morning was took the case cover off and tapped on the hard drive with my fingers and low and behold it booted up, no funky sounds or anything. Question is, is this hard drive goin bad. Or could it be something else. The hard drive is an IBM. I went to their site this morning and d/l Drive Fitness Test program and ran it and everything tested ok. ?

Hi Spongebob,

Start backing up your data and start the RMA process or prepare to purchase a new drive very soon.

I had a 9 GB IBM 22GXP that started making a weird clicking noise on boot up. It wouldn't happen every time, but the frequency increased as time went on. Last month, it took much longer to get the drive going so I placed an order for a new drive (old IBM was over 3 years old so no warranty). After it arrived, I ghosted the data from the old drive to the new drive. That same day, the old IBM finally gave up.

Don't wait too long.

Thanks for the replies. I already have all of my files backed up cause i reformatted about 2 weeks ago. The thing of it is, is this will be the second hard drive in about 2 years that I put in here. Both IBM hard drives. At least its not costing me anything, still under warranty. I know one thing, when i go to build a new computer, I will not be buying an IBM hard drive.

The same problem drove me batty for 6 months. Ended up being the power connector from supply. I too could bump it and get a go/no go. Almost condemned the hd, but instead changed connectors. It's great now.
