Slow Upload Speed
I'm running Road Runner cable on a brand new machine and the upload speed is terrible. I just built my machine. It runs fine. My down speed is really good. It hits goes bast 1MBit but my up can hardly go past 230Kbit. What's the problem. I bought this computer so I can play games on the internet (Counter-Strike mostly) and now its gaying up on me lovely because games need more up than down. Any suggestions? What should I do?

Relize that your ISP is like 90% of all ISP's and gives you one CRAPPY upstream rate... your probably gonna have to shell out alotta cash to git a nice upstream rate. Really though those are perfectly acceptable speeds most other people are probably at the same speeds if not a bit slower...
Why do ISP's give out low upstream rates you ask? 1. Keeps the cost lower to the customer since less of there bandwidth is taken up. 2. They dont want to be associated with someone hosting a website usually... or uploading illegal "warez" etc. 3. Most customers we must accept are reasonably computer illiterate and even if they are computer literate will not be using upstream speed nearly as much as downstream. Im sure others can add better reasons but three that came to me quickly. |

230? You are actually lucky - most cable connections are capped at 128 for upload. Sounds like you are one of the fortunate ones who is capped at 256. If you want the same upload speed as your download you have to buy a commercial grade broadband service, which costs hundreds of dollars a month. They do this intentionally to discourage the use of servers on a residential grade (spelled AFFORDABLE) account. DSL is the same situation - residential grade ADSL service is capped where business grade SDSL is not.
