Hi guys, I have an old 166 mmx and am thinking of upgrading to 233 mhz. I don't know if the 166 has a cooling fan or indeed needs one. If it does then will that cooling fan also work on the 233 mhz chip. I know I am probably insulting your intelligence with this one, but I would be greatful for an answer.

Yes, you need a fan unless there is a case fan blowing directly across the heatsink. The 166 fan (if it has one) will work fine. If you need a new fan and can't find a Socket 7 unit, a Socket 370 one will work fine.

Yes you will need one - the P-166 comes with one attached to the CPU itselft - the fan can be removed not so the base of it - so if you get a TRAY 233 - then there you need one - if you get a boxed one then the fan will be attached to it..
