Angry USB root hub conflict w/ Matsonic Mobo VIA Chipset (Windows98)

My USB root hubs show a conflict in Device Mangager (Windows98 SE). All other devices are functioning OK. I tried the remove/refresh method then tried to reinstall the drivers from the Windows CD, but when I reboot, USB root hub devices show a conflict (displaying the excalamtion point (!)). I tried installing the drivers from the Matsonic utilities CD but the drivers cannot be found. Matsonic doesn't have anything on its website concerning this problem. There are some BIOS upgrades for this board, but not pertaining to anything USB that I could discern. Should I just download and flash anyway? I dashed an email off to their techsupport team weeks ago. I have yet to hear from them. I think my next mobo purchase will be an ASUS, right? I guess my main question is should I be installing the Win98 USB drivers or the drivers from the Mobo's utility disk, if they are present? You would think that the root hub USB drivers would be specific to the mobo, but every time I remove/refresh, I get the 'Insert Windows98 CD' message. If, say, I remove the drivers and just reboot, windows does recognize the "new" hardware but it has a problem with the drivers after an install attempt. I have also heard rumors and reports that the VIA chipsets have problems with USB, has anyone heard of this? I will except all expert comments and criticisms or any suggestions on what I may be overlooking. I'm attempting to upgrade to Windows XP and will not be able to do so until I can get this hardware issue resolved. Thanks in advance.

1.use this to dertemine your motherboard - http://www.unicore.com/biosagent/index.html
2.post back the bios version and all other things you get from the program.
3.If you haven't then enable USB in the bios and make sure that you disable all uneeded Ports - like serial port2 ..
4.Mostly reason for USB not to work is because it hasn't been in BIOS in first place ..
windows 98 is able to install the drivers witout any add ons on most boards..
let us know the outcome.
