Question Serial cable and router

I messed up my router's (a Netgear RT314) configuration. Now my computers can't access it at all. I'd like to reset it back to the factory default. I can with this serial port on the back of it. The problem is, I need a female to male serial cable (DB9F to DB9M). I have a female to female cable that came with Lego Mindstorms. I cut down paperclips and fit them into one end of the cable. Then I got that into the router. So right now the cable is pretty snuggly fit into the router. What I want to know is, will this work? My concerns: The cable I have might not be DB9F to DB9F, but something else (is that possible?) and might be wired differently than it has to be for this to work. Will paperclips work?? Could this mess anything up more than it already is? I guess I could buy the right cable, but I don't feel like it. I'd rather do this. I just don't want to mess anything up. All help is appreciated.. thanx

Cool

You can but male-to-female and female-to-male conversion connectors. Much better than paper clips.

I'm only familiar with Cisco and Baynet but it sounds like you might need a crossover i.e. null modem cable(?). You can get one cheap from Googlegear at this link...http://www.googlegear.com/ggweb/jsp/...uctCode=315211
