Cool

Are the temps listed below too hot for my system configuration?

VIA TI5VG+1
AMD K6-2 500Mhz
196Mb PC100
Creative Labs TNT2 Ultra (32Mb)
40x CDROM
4x4x8 CDR
Iomega Ditto Tape Backup
floppy drive
6.4Gb Maxtor
4.3Gb Fujitsu

--- MAINBOARD 39C/102F
--- CPU 50C/122F

What temperatures do YOU get in your system?
Thanks for your replys!

I have an .18 Micron Athlon 700. It runs at 33C/91C for the processor and 27C/80C for the case temp. What are you using to get your temps? Are the probes built into the board? Are you using stuff that came with the mobo, or third party software?

I'm using Hardware Sensors Monitor. I get the same numbers when I use Motherboard Monitor.

What kind of cooling do you have for your case? cpu?

Cool

Inside the mid-tower case I have a 8CFM front-bottom fan and the power supply exhaust fan at the rear-top.

I JUST bought a 2COOLPC (42CFM) case cooler and placed it inside resulting in a minimal 2 degree temperature decrease.

Finally, the tower is inside a desk/hutch. Concerned that there would be heat build-up inside the hutch, I cut out a hole on the back board of the hutch directly aft of the power supply exhaust air and mounted another 8CFM fan that vents the hot air.

The tower doesn't sound too hot based on the temps of other's, but could it be that the heatsink/fan is inadequate for the AMD chip?

Should I consider:
-a thermal compound
-a Golden Orb
-a Global Win F0P32 or
-a PAL6035 Alpha Socket 7 Cooler Kit
-etc.

Help.

All those things you listed will decrease the temp of the CPU, not the case. Whats the room temp?

I agree that those things are all great for the CPU, but I feel you need to get that hot air out of the case. Try the infamous blowhole, or add more exhaust fans in the back and bigger intake fans in the front. It is pretty normal for the CPU to be hotter than the system temp, which is displayed by your mobo temp. I had a similar hutch kind of desk, and ended up getting rid of it because of heat build up. If you want to keep the hutch, you could probably remove your case, since the tower is inside of the desk. That should help airflow, too.

Cool

Room temp is 23c/73f.

It is my hope that by cooling the AMD chip more effectively, the tower will stay cool also (and I can see an elimination of the Blue Screens of Death that keep coming up also).

Right now, the AMD and Riva TNT2 chips are the big heat generators (hottest to touch).

Thanks in advance for telling me what you think and about your temps.

If you cool the chip but don't put enough fns in the case, the heat that came off the processor will have nowhere to go. It will stay in the case. Just the fan on the ps will not help. My ps fan doesn't even really keep the power supply cool. Where exactly are the other case fans located, and which way are they facing? You generally want to have the airflow all go one way. This means the one in back go the same way as the ps (usually out), and the ones in the front would go the opposite of that. Otherwise you create pockets of null air, where the air is not moving.

Cool

The front end fan is blowing into the case and I'm only using the ps to exhaust.

Sound like I should get another fan to exhaust out of the case at the top rear.

Is an 8CFM fan enough?

Exclamation

Im not sure that 8CFM is very much.

8cfm is really small, my CPU fans put out over 52cfm...

Swing by the local Radio Shack and grab a nice case fan, should cost about $10-15, and push somewhere around 40cfm.
