motherboard options: availablity & pricing?

Hi,

My question concerns options on the ASUS p4b266 motherboard and motherboards in general.

1) Do local retailers who lists these boards- do they add on the options themselves or do they order it pre-made from Asus? (eg parallel port, USB2, lan, audio, S/PDIF in/out etc are all optional)

2)Is there somewhere to price all the options online- (am not quite ready to deal with salesmen)

See- these retailers list prices- but the prices are for optionless boards. I'm looking to find an idea of how much extra the various options will cost. Finally- probably a dumb question, but just in case, could any of these options be ordered and added later-by myself?

Thanx

Hi buildingit,

Those "options" are installed at the factory during the manufacturing process.

With ASUS, they have a way to identify what is included on their motherboards. After the initial model number identification (P4B), you may see a -L (LAN), -S (SCSI), -D (Dual CPU's), -M (Micro ATX) and so on...

Check at places like Newegg.com and MWave.com to see if they have the particular ASUS motherboard you're looking for.

Thanx!

I checked out all 3 sites: it seems resellers choose a single set of options for any given memory type and only sell that one set of options- bit of a bugger, and none say for sure in LPT is included (it's optional!) Perhaps I'll go with Intel instead- there's an Intel place here (Vancouver) that sells various permutations.

Thing is Intel motherboards have only one ATA slot whereas Asus's have 2..... am a bit undecided about this.

Anyway, thanx for the responses!

????? You mean IDE connector? There have always been 2 on any Intel motherboard I have ever seen.

yes- ide.

Intel D845BGSE: i845/S478, DDR, ATA100, AGP4x, 6PCI, CNR, 5USB2.0, ATX12V, Audio

vs

P4B266: Intel i845, P4-S478, FBS400, 4DDR/5P/4USB, 2xATA100, AGP4x

I hope you are right!!! Time for me to check the Intel site rather than this retailer.

Thanx

Yes, that intel board has two ata100 connectors. All that retailer is saying is that the board supports the ata100 protocol as a selling point. It is understood that both ide connectors will have it.

Are you talking about the parallel or "printer port"?

If you are, that's built-in on all modern motherboards.

Yes thanks, you are right!! That Asus web site listed it as optional for the P4B266 but not for the P4B266-Se, -e etc. :

Back Panel I/O
2 x Serial Ports, 1 x Parallel Port (Optional), PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse Connector,
Game/Mic-in/Line-in/Line-out Ports, 2 USB 1.1 Ports, RJ-45 LAN Port (option)

but I looked in their online manual, and it is indeed NOT optional One less thing to worry about! Thank you
