Hi,
We had a fellowes gel mouse didn't like it so bought an intellimouse.removed the old mouse attached the new one and booted up. Tried to install the software for the intellipoint 4.0. got this message "windows Installer 1:2803:2 setup error 3456" . so we went with the windows drivers ! mouse seemed to work fine got on the internet and after a few moments the mouse pointer freezes in place but if you move the mouse you can see that it is highlighting things, reinstalled the old mouse same problem(didn't do this before). Now niether mouse will work properly. After the mouse freezes so does IE. I have checked file system , uninstalled both mice , reinstalled IE 6.0. extracted files from disk, short of getting a sledgehammer and fixing the mouse LOL. i've been to microsoft web page no help there also did a search on google same results i'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks Sharon

Hi shazzz,
Try this...restart your computer and as soon as you see the message "Verifying DMI Pool data..." hit and hold the Ctrl key. You will be presented with the Boot Menu, choose number 3: Windows Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, go to Device Manager (right click on My Computer and choose Properties. In the System Properties box, click the Device Manager tab) and then click on the "+" sign next to the mouse. Remove any extra mouse entries that aren't related to the one you're using now. Click Okay and reboot to normal Windows. You may want to skip installing the mouse driver next time you install another mouse. The Windows mouse driver works fine with any regular mouse (even the optical ones). You only need to install the mouse driver that comes with the new mouse if it supports extra things like support for a 4 button mouse. Cricket

Or
If it's a Windows Installer problem, you could update/reload your Windows Installer Package here > Redistributable v1.2 for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME I had a problem with the Windows Installer before and a reinstall/update fixed it. It may or may not help but it's an option. |

Hi,
thanks guys i've tried both suggestions but to no avail i'm still getting the windows installer error!. I now have at least 3 copies of the windows installer update on my computer but when i try to open them i get the "windows installer 1:2803 2: setup error 3:4;5;6;". I also removed all mice and even mouse port rebooted and installed drivers, but it didn't do any good!. I'm begining to think it's something other than the mouse as i can't play my freecell or solitaire and my colors are now messing up!. The mouse itself works fine until it freezes and it only freezes when i'm online.I've checked out my device manager and there are no conflicts there also i seem to have all the right drivers installed. I'm really don't know what to do next!? Thanks again sharon |

A few things you can try.
1. Delete cookies and scan for spyware. 2. Scan for viruses. Did the new mouse driver come from a floppy? Iv seen viruses come from straight from the factory. 3. Run System file checker, Registry Checker, Internet Explorer Repair Tool.(start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information>tools)all 3 and more are there. 4. Start disableing things in the start-up menu one at a time then reboot each time. This is where I would start. hope it helps.

Maybe it's luck, but I have always had errors when trying to install intellepoint software with the disk that came with the mouse. To get by this I always went to the Microsoft download site and got the latest version of the software. Which by the way you don't really need.
Of course the best solution, which was my solution, is next time get a Logitech mouse. |

I agree with morris, my experiences with Intellipoint s/w were such that now I just live with the native drivers in windows. I may be missing out on a couple features, but just give me a right/left clicker, add a scroll bar in the middle, and I'm a happy surfer.

I quit on Microsoft mice with the first optical wheel mouse Microsoft sold. the USB mouse had a USB to PS2 adapter and it was finicky as all get out. Logitech makes a better mouse, period.
