IBM DESKSTAR 75GXP woes!

Don't know if anybody is aware of this but there are problems with the IBM DESKSTAR 75GXP range of hard drives.

I had one of these 7,200RPM hard drives up until recently and my computer was always crashing. System would just hang with a "reset" always required. I thought maybe it was a defective hard drive or WindowsME problems but I came across an article in the UK magazine PCPro (highly respected) which says thousands of users have been having problems with these hard drives and IBM are denying there is a problem.

If you have one of these and it works then great but I'd recommend anyone else to steer well clear of these.

I've now settled back to an enjoyable computing experience again with my new Western Digital 60GB hard drive. I've never had any problems with Western Digital HD's.

Send it back to them. There has already been several articles in the Mags here about them. It is starting to look like the IBM is the Quantium Bigfoot of the 21st century.

I sold it to some other poor soul.

The magazine article over here stated (from Decembers issue I think) that since IBM were denying there was a problem then they were not accepting the return of these defective hard drives.

Have you heard anything new? Has there been a u-turn on IBM's part?

I've got a 15Gb IBM 75GXP...

When they were released they got quite good reviews and I've certainly had no troubles with mine so far. What's meant to go wrong with them? Is it a fault that develops over time or is there something already faulty in some of them? I'm hoping the latter and that I've got a 'good one'...

Anyone know where I can find a copy of any of these articles online?

I guess I'll just have to carry on making regular backups and hope it's ok...

I had a 15GB 75GXP that got bad sectors within 6 months of manufacture. I RMA'd it to IBM with no problems whatsoever. So the "they won't RMA it" part is definitely bull.

But that series definitely has problems. The platters in the drive are glass.
