I was using my HP Deskjet 930C printer with Win98 with no problems. It was hooked up to my scanner on the parallel port.
I installed WinXP as a Update and downloaded the new driver and the printer worked fine the one time I tried to use it. But I had problems with some other programs and the warrenty people suggested I start over and reinstall WinXP as a new install rather than an update...after that its been one problem after another. When the "new install" was done I had to reinstall everything...scanner turned out ok but this printer is a nightmare. First I tried to reinstall it with the CD that came with it...the program wouldn't even open up, I kept getting a message that "The drive is not supported on Win200" I don't even have win2000! I've tried going into the device manager and turning off the drive signing and that didn't help. Next I went to the HP site and they have a download for the printer...I tried using it both ways...one I downloaded myself and tried to run it...and then I tried to just let them do the automatic install. Both times they can't find the ports. I'm trying not to sound to confusing here...but...I've tried hooking the printer up just like it was before to the scanner using parallel ports and I went out and both a USB cable and tried to hook it up by itself. Neither way worked. I kept getting a message that my printer is not hooked up to each place. Each time I try something I go into the program files to make sure all the folders are out...I'm doing this trying to make sure that old files aren't confusing the new ones...and I've restarted the comupter each time. I have a feeling that the updated files from HP aren't working and can't fine the printer because I need to put the "old" files from the original cd in the computer. But I can't do that because windows won't let me run. Help!!! I've been doing this for 3 days and so far HP hasn't replied to any of my emails. Does anyone know how to make windows let me install the old version? Also I know that I'm on as the administrater because I only put in the one user account. I even went to the registry after I deleted all printer files and rebooted and saw that there were alot of HP stuff in there. I was tempted to delete them but didn't because I didn't know if that would mess things up even worse. Could that be the problem? |

I was just about to post a tip. If it sees your old printer (930c) then just do the update drivers and point it to the old one, if that's the one's you want to use. I also have a problem with "new XP" drivers for my 970cxi. Since my printer is on my win2k box, I must use the drivers that came with XP ( I am printing from Xp to my win2k box), because the newer drivers do not work as well, in my case anyway...

Similar thing happened to me with an HP 950C. My problem was in ME, but I think it may be relevant to this/other problems. I used the USB setup, and mucked it up the first time around. I could not get it to reinstall a second/third/fourth/etc. I finally found a uninstall fix on the HP website. It seems that in 98 and ME, when you first run setup, if it doesn't go well, and you uninstall it, there are still files pointing to the USB port. As a result, when I tried to install it again, it would not recognize the printer being there. The Uninstall fix worked for me.

Thanks for the replies Cobra and BFD Deadeye
![]() What I finally ended up doing was uninstalling the scanner and taking it compleatly out of the system. Then I hooked up the printer,(the HP desk Jet)using the parallel cable and that one still wouldn't let me install it. Then I tried my other printer, an Epson Stylus Color 880. This one installed ok using the update from it's web site, I didn't even try to use the CD that came with it. Then I figured I might as well try to hook the scanner up again and the thing actually worked So the printer is still going into the scanner like before, still don't know why this worked after everything else I've tried.Well actually, something isn't right because when I first boot up the computer, if the printer is on or if I turn it on than that simple fool the Hardware Manager comes on telling me he found new hardware and tries to install my printer!! At first I tried to install it even though it's already in there and working, but the hardware manager keeps asking me for a file, a DLL file, that I don't have and then tells me installation failed. Also if I look in the device manager my scanner is listed there but my printer is nowhere to be found. The printer is listed in the system information program though. So I know something isn't right but as long as I can print and scan I'll put up with the naggy hardware manager lol. |

I have the same problem in win2k
If I turn the power off on my printer, then back on, I can not print. I have to reboot. Sux.
