Bad Hard Drive Question
Hey guys well yesterday i did my first build and all was well and then today my hard drive was making a loud clicking and it shut the computer down when i was gaming. I tried to boot back up and it said primary device failure, and whenever it says that the hard drive light shuts off inside the case. My question is..Is there anything i could have done during the install to make the hard drive go bad, but it worked great the day before although i did hear some clicking. Could jumper settings cause this or anything cause the hard drive was oem and didnt have a manual but i set the jumper to what i thought was cable select. Any info would be appreciated, i was just wondering so i didnt do it again to my new drive thats on the way.

Hi Lehman,
It just happens sometimes, even the good brands make some lemon drives. And that's how they usually die too, they work one minute and the next you start hearing a click/knock sound. There's nothing you can do jumper or software wise to mess it up, unless you happen to have dropped it 3-4 ft. before installing it. ![]() Don't let this problem make you nervous about your decision to build your own system, as soon as the new drive arrives and the system is up and working you'll be glad you did.

Hi Lehman,
I agree with DrZaius...sometimes it just happens, no matter who made the product. I think we've all experienced a bad part from time to time (I know I have). As DrZaius says, don't let this experience bum you out so much that you don't want to do it anymore...that would be a shame. Cricket

Thanks for the reply once again DrZ. Just so you know i stuck with your system design you gave me 100% but i switched the 1600+ to the 1800+ cause i got a little more back in taxes then i figured. I also got win xp pro for $10 at my college. Yeh i guess im just nervous about it cause i was so happy everything was working and then that happened, i was real surprised at the first boot up when everything worked but the power led and hdd led. But i definately wont buy another computer, even if i need to get 4 hard drives before one works
, because of the experience building my own has given me and the feeling of victory you get when it runs successfully even if its for one day .

Unfortunatly, there will always be newhardware failures, fortunatly these are usually far between. It has long bee said , that if an electronic based componat last the first 24 hours it will last 24 years.
