Question SB Audigy - Digital vs. Analog

Can someone explain why there are digital and analog jacks on an Audigy sound card, and when one should use them? It seems strange to hook a CDRW or a DVD up as analog, but both of mine came with digital and analog cables. Does it have anything to do with what speakers one is using?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Hi justshawn,

If your optical drives had only analog, then, obviously, you would hook them up as analog. The same with digital. The option of having both on the same drive is becomming increasingly availible. This would give you your choice.

But, the Audigy has only one digital input (on the card itself, not referring to the jack panel on the back, or the breakout box if you have one.), but has 3 analog inputs (including the TAD). So your choices are limited if you have multiple drives.

No it has nothing to do with the speakers you're running.

HTH
