Built my new system!
ive just built my new system and have one problem. The monitor that i have is 5 years old. The connections on the back do not fit on my new system. The monitor was originally on a baby AT case which had two power connections on it. 1 for the mains power supply and the other to power the monitor. On the new ATX case there is only one power supply connection and that is for the mains power. I have tried connecting the old cables so that the end of the monitor cable connected to the end of the old power supply cable. Brilliant!! it worked the first time but since then it does not work. The monitor powers up but then theres no picture or anything the only thing there is, is an orange light on the monitor indicator that starts off green when powered up and then glows to orange. i was thinking of chopping the end off the monitor cable and attaching a (uk spec) plug to it and see if that would work that way.. but im not sure if i should. any suggestion on what i can do?? All help is greatfully appreciated. |

Usually you can unplug the power cord where it is attached to the monitor and replace it with the proper type. If it is hard wired in, then yes you could put another end on it if you feel comfortable doing that.
Most all monitors show green light when they're initially started up, and then go to orange if there is no signal input. If your new pc is running and the monitor is powered up and connected to the VGA, then you should get a signal input and the light should stay green.

If your not even getting the BIOS splash screen then it does indeed sound like a graphics card problem. Has the graphics card come loose or slightly out of it's slot (just push down on it to make sure it is firmly in).
The next step would be to eliminate the monitor by plugging it into another PC or laptop. If this works I would replace the graphics card. If you can get old of a spare card (regardless of age) this will prove it one way or the other. |

i have connected the monitor to my laptop and that works perfectly... the graphics card is slotted in all the way. so i guess it could be the graphics card itself which i will replace in the morning. will let u know has it goes.

is it possible that the monitor is a old cga type and not the newer vga or svga type, if cga, it will not work.

my monitor is a vga monitor, and i have also tried a different monitor and it does not work either. i have been told that i could be mny motherboard that is faulty. therefore i am going to return my motherboard in the morning and get a new one. hopefully that should solve the problem.
will let u know how it goes. wakar. |

Hi Waks,
I don't mean to try and state what's possibly obvious, but you said you just built this system then stuck another graphics card in it. Did your motherboard have onboard video and if so did you disable it so it would look for the mach64 card? If not it would be sending the signal out the onboard port and your monitor would be plugged into the other card. |

got the monitor to work.... it seemed like the motherboard was the problem. they swapped it for me and i connected everything again as before and BANG! it works perfectly. Only one problem left now and thats the floppy drive.
when i switch the system on the floppy drive light is always on. whenever i put a floppy disk into the drive is throws out an error saying that there is no floppy disk in the disk. i have tried changing the connection around on the back of the drive (the power cable that connect to it), but to no avail. There are no yellow ? marks under device manager... could it be that the drive is faulty itself and its time to get a new one. this drive is about 6 years old now. thanks in advance waks |

When the Floppy drive light stays on it's usually due to the floppy's data cable being the wrong way round. Trying swapping it round on the back of the floppy drive. Also double check no pins have got bent on the back of the floppy drive. This is quite easily done with floppy drives. Also make sure the data cable end's is the right way round. That is, the end with the twisted swap over part of the cable closest to it needs to be plugged into the floppy drive.
