Ron - if you insist on using that softmodem you have to shut off Com 2 in CMOS and remove it from device manager before installing the modem.

Do yourself a big favor and get a Supra Express hardware modem - either internal *ISA* or external serial (NOT usb).

I'm adding hardware into my new computer and my Zoom PCI Modem isn't working. It's recognized in the device manager but when I go to diagnostics, it says "port already open". I only have the modem, mouse, and keyboard install right now. No sound card yet.

Go into the bios and turn off your com ports for right now and then boot in and see if it works.

Hey glc,
I know the Supra Express is a better modem, no question about it. However, I've use this Zoom PCI winmodem for about 3 yrs. and it works fine for my purposes which is just basic web surfing. On my old computer, it was installed on COM 4. On this one, Win98 put it on COM 3. I know the solution is simple it's just I'm not that familiar with COM ports and how they work. However, I just built my first computer with PCMech's help (everybody here) and I was able to solve every problem I ran into.

Also, under the bios, which section do I go to to disable the COM port? Or put another way, what is the setting called?

On Award bioses, its usually in Integrated Peripherals. It's prolly labeled Serial Port 2 or UART 2. Change it to Disabled, and make sure Serial Port 1 or UART 1 is set to 3F8/IRQ4. Make sure you remove all com ports in device manager except Com 1. Don't put the modem (or any other card) in PCI slot 1 unless you absolutely have to. If you do put a card in there, try to make sure it's a card that does not use an IRQ, such as a Voodoo video addon card. What you are looking for after installation is the modem sitting nice and pretty on Com 2 IRQ 3.
