need help, floppy disk fail (40) on boot up.

Just built my first computer yesterday, everything is fine except for floppy disk fail on start up. Have option to F1 to continue or del to enter setup.

F1 will take me to windows, del to bios. Floppy is recognized in both bios and device manager, which says both device and controller are working properly.

specs
athlon 1700+ cpu
maxtor 40 gig hd
k7 ad70-sc mobo
256 mb ddr ram
optorite 16x cd rw
stupid teac fd

Checked the cable, twist is at floppy.Heres the weird part, red line should be pin 1 to pin 1, but the pin 1 on the floppy is on the other side of the cable from pin 1 on the mobo. This is according to pic in floppy manual(pin 1 location).

Unplug the cable from your floppy, rotate it 180 degrees, and plug it back in. It's in upside down, that's all.

If the light stays on at the floppy more than likely youneed to do a 180 with your ribbon cable.

There is a bump on top[ of the cable that prevents me from plugging in upside down as it hits the bottom of the floppy and won't plug.

Is it okay to trim this off and plug upside down? I wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not. Is this still pin 1 to pin 1(with the 180 in the cable)?

I'm certain that is your problem. If it wont go in, cut the notch, but you can try to wiggle the thing on. You won't hurt it if you plug it in wrong...I'm sure it's on wrong right now.
