Modem not there, kind of.

My friend has this HP Pavilion and the modem stopped responding. I deleted it and reinstalled it. Win98 SE recognized it fine and installed with no problem. Go into modem properties & no modem is showing, but goto diagnostics, and shows com2 with nothing installed to it(blank under installed). But highlite com2 and click more info, and it shows the proper modem with no problems or errors showing. Go into system device manager and shows proper modem enumerator & modem with no problems. But dial-up networking will not find any modem to use. device mgr shows it sharing an irq with other devices, but you cannot change anyone of them.. JK

Sharing the IRQ is the problem. Remove the modem from device manager, reboot, get into your BIOS, and look for an option that says "PnP OS Installed", and set it to No or Disable. Reboot again, and reinstall the modem.

That'll force Windows to give each device its own IRQ, instead of sharing the modem IRQ out (which by the way is gonna kill it's performance anyways since it's a winmodem).

Should solve the problem.

This is an HP, and won't have any of those options in BIOS. Just disable com 2 in BIOS (serial B) and hope the modem takes it.
Try moving the modem to a different slot.

Bleh, even the BIOS is proprietary on an HP?

And I thought that the proprietary Win98 was bad....

did that. it does set up on com2, but using irq 9, which is used by audio codec and SMBus controller. there are no free irq's, and like I said, it won't let me changed any of them. also tried different slot(only three), and tried a diamond supramax and a hawking modem(mototola chip) and they both did the same thing.

Yea I know. more money but you'll be glad you did.Reboot has a favorite one and it works great. Diamond brand.

I think with win modems you need to remove all relating software before you reinstall.?Just remove from device manager is not enough. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Yeah, the Supra Max is just another Winmodem, basically the same thing you have now.

If you got the cash and really wanna solve the problem, I agree, Supra Express External (serial). Just checked CompUSA's site, should run ya 79 bucks there.

I guess the external sounds like a winner. I even tried deleting com1 and reserving irq9. then deleted the sound and modem and rebooted. that forced everything to irq4. then i unreserved irq9 and deleted the sound. when i rebooted the modem just followed the sound back to irq9 and left irq4 open. this hp is some piece of crap.
