After working well for more than three years, my 12x CD drive, mounted in a 200MHz Dell machine running W98SE, now works intermittingly and usually only after cycling the tray in and out many times. When the drive works, there are “No conflicts” reported by Device Manager.
I installed a spare ribbon-cable and ensured that it was solidly seated, but no cigar. Next up was a new drive, which did not cure the problem, either. Then, because I had not done so for a couple of years anyway, I reformatted the hard drive. The first attempt at reinstalling Windows did not succeed as the CD drive misbehaved during setup’s reboot. The second try was successful, however. Still, the unit acts the same as before. What should be my next troubleshooting-step? [This message has been edited by georgeazar (edited 06-28-2000).] |

Slave the CD to the hard drive for troubleshooting purposes - your secondary controller may be having a problem.
