I have an external modem and up until about two days ago, when dialing up to connect to the net, it always made a screechy sound ( which I thought was normal, as every modem that I have had has done this) Now it dials silently and gives no dialing sound as before. It still works perfectly but I was wondering what has caused this to happen, have I changed some setting accidently or is it anything serious.

Cool

Check the volume control. From desktop open; My Computer, Dial-up networking, right click icon you're using to connect, click properties, under general tab select modem you're using, click configure. Volume control is there.

My external modem also has a volume control dial on the modem itself. I have accidently "adjusted" the dial while moving the modem around on the desk.

Thanks confused, you were right, it was the volume control in the properties for the modem that needed turning up. Somehow I must have turned it off without realizing it..
Thanks again.

I guess it's a good thing that you solved the problem of not hearing the screeching sound of your modem, but I personally would rather not hear it! It is a really annoying to me and I have mine turned all the way down. If there is a dial-up problem, I will know it soon enough when I get an error message when using my dial-up ISP screen.
