Unhappy

I have a Microtek ScanMaker V600 scanner. At one time it worked. Now when I try to scan something, it starts up and then freezes up my computer. I've tried calling Microtek about the problem and they want $30 to help me. I've got it paralleled to my printer and zip drive. I also have a CD-RW drive that uses Adaptec software. I mention this because I read about a possible conflict with the scanner and certain types of Adaptec software. Device Manager says that it is not detecting a device and for me to check my connections. I have double checked and they are fine. I am running Win98 on a 333 Mhz (Celeron) system. Help anyone?

I doubt that your problem is the Adaptec. Scanners have a way of going AWOL.

Delete the scanner from device manager and reboot.

If that doesn’t work:
Uninstall the Microtek software.
Start/Find/Files and Folders (C) and do a search for TWAIN
Delete all TWAIN files.
Do a search for Microtek, ScanMaker and ScanWizard. Delete all files.
Empty the recycle bin.
Reinstall the software.

If you are still having problems, disconnect the printer and Zip and just plug in the scanner. You don’t want to leave it that way but it might give you an idea of what is going on.

You might consider getting a dual PCI parallel port card so each device has its own port. Daisy chains can be a nightmare.

Thumbs up

Have you tried switching positions of the zip and the scanner.. Put the scanner first in line.... AFTER doing the sw re-install. I once had a 3 device parallel chain working, but not for very long. I added a parallel port card for the scanner and left the zip and printer on lpt1.

I'd be willing to bet the Zip drive (or should I say drivers) are the problem. Uninstall them and I'll bet your problems disappear!
