The wife brought a modem home from work yesterday that was marked bad. They said if I want it I can have it. It's a US Robotics Sportster External 33.6 Faxmodem. No drivers, manuals or anything. I hooked it up and it works. Great. It connects at 28.8. Problem is that it won't hang up. Leaves the phone line open. I have to physically unplug the phone line from the modem to get the phone line to hang up. Can this be fixed? I know nothing about external modems.
Dip switch settings: 1. Data terminal ready 2. Verbal result codes 3. Display codes 4. Echo offline commands 5. Higher if specified in NVRAM 6. Carrier detect normal 7. Load NVRAM defaults 8. Dumb mode Model number: 00083907 OS: Win2K |

Modem
Hi Bosco: I think I would start by going to US Robotic's site & downloading the latest drivers for that unit. Then go to your modem properties in control panel and make sure it is configured properly.Next go to the Connections tab in Internet Options and check that this is configured properly.

ctrl-alt-del, select RNAAPP and end task. That will release the line w/o rebooting. There are other variables, but I've never had the problem with any modem. Unless you're using a 3rd party software to connect, are you right clicking the little green icon in bottom tray, then selecting disconnect? That should be all you need to do. If it doesn't work, see plan A.

Number 7 in the dip switch settings sounds like a good place to start.

Why not just contact the 3COM helpdesk ? I just contacted them abt the exactly same US Robotics 33.6 faxmodem, and after going through their friendly helpdesk support at the Philipines, a sweet lady went through the troubleshooting, and confirmed it was spoiled, and they had a new one sent to us, after we have sent the spoilt one to their collection centre. Not bad support from them .

It's worth a try, seems nothing to lose. Anyway, as long you've got the serial number, don't think they would bother, whether you've bought it or someone gave it to you.And if I'm not mistaken, US Robotics says their modem are life-time warranty-As far as I can remembered. I remembered for my case, they didn't ask me when I bought it. And it's not cheap to get a quality modem like US Robotics either .
