working on friends computer
I have a few questions....like where do I start?
I have a friends computer that is in need of repair. It is am AMD 550 mhz(I think) running win95 with 128 meg ram, defective video card, and a 1.2 gig hard drive. She wants to upgrade the hard drive to a larger one. I have a 40 gig IBM(new). When I hook it up and fdisk it(using win98se boot disk) it only shows 1.2 gig. What gives? How do I make it see the enitre 40 gigs? It is a soyo mainboard - I think, it says soyo all over it. How do find out what model it is exactly? Thanks, hoemee |

What version of 95 is on the system and what file system does it have. 95A only uses fat16 and can't see large disks.
To find out any system info, try the free version of SiSoft Sandra |

I just unplugged the old hard drive and plugged in the new one. I then Fdisked it and ran format. I did this with a win98se boot disk, and it still did not show above 1.2 gigs.

Make sure all IDE channels are set to AUTO in the standard CMOS setup and not USER or NONE.
To determine the motherboard model, pause the boot screen and copy down the bios string in the lower left corner, post it here. It's very possible that the bios has a 32gb limit on hard drive size and you will need a controller card or bios overlay to install a 40gb drive. |

Put that post number into Google and then get a bios update and that should fix it if there are any bios updates

O.K. - here are the numbers in the lower left on boot up:
10/05/1999-SIS-530-2A5IMS29C-00 I did go into the Auto detect hard drive in Cmos and it now shows 40 gigs - so I am making progress. In the standard Cmos screen the primary was set to user and I just set it to Auto |

It is now showing as 40 gigs, I fdisked it and am now formatting it. That google search page showed me that I have an SiS 530 chipset on a soyo motherboard. Should I still look for an upgrade the bios?
Thanks |

I wouldn't bother, if it's not broken, don't try and fix it
![]() If it's showing the 40 gigs, unless you are having other problems, I wouldn't bother updating the BIOS HTH, Thanks,

As soon as I got the first screen I just hit the pause key and it stopped right there
