Question Afreey 50x cd rom prob

I built system for friend 1 year ago;
msi k7t pro 2a
800 duron
wd 20 gig master
afreey 50x cd rom slave
pc 133 256mb
trident blade 8mb
Lucent winmodem
windows me
250 watt generic pw supply

A few days ago the problem started w/cd rom, you put a cd in and you can here the thing take off,and about the time you would expect the program to load,there is a click in the cd rom and everything shuts down,
then power supply clicks then cd rom and so on!
I installed an old trashy cd rom i had laying around and everything worked fine!

just for giggles i tried the afreey cd rom in my system as slave on ide 2 with sony cd/rw master,same config w/ati radeon 64mb ddr vivo,700 duron,300 watt pw supply,case fan,and it worked fine.
Today I was getting tired of all the noise from the big athalon heatsink and fan i had originaly installed in my system, and installed a chrome orb I had layin around (the core is still 25c at idle and no more than 35c gaming, but on first boot the cd rom started making grinding sounds and the system locked up.
Any idea what might cause this,I was guessing maybe the cdrom is slowly declining,and requiring more watts.
If anyone knows whats up or how to fix i would appreciate the help,
otherwise i guess its the trash can...thanx in advance
