New mobo issues
Previously had a Epox mobo with AMD K6-III chip.I recently made the switch to Pentium with an Asus P4b mobo with a 1.7 chip. Had an IBM 45gb HD, purchased an IBM 60gb and ghosted everything over to the 60gb. Everything worked well in the transfer to the new board with the exception of a few issues.
1) Having trouble getting the secondary IDE to read both drives. I have a 250- zip drive and a standard creative cd-rom The board only recognizes 1 drive at a time. In other words; If I use both connections it doesn't see either drive. If I use one or the other, no matter if it is the 1st or 2nd position on the connection. It will read that particular drive, but only as a slave, never as the master. I am sure this is a BIOS setup matter, however, when I go to BIOS setup and select anything but “Auto” detect for the primary and slave IDE settings, the board issues a IDE fail read. By the way, I have 2 SCSI cd-roms drives installed and running fine. 2) When I installed the new-ghosted hard drive, the board recognized all the new devices and installed all the drivers with the exception of the PCI Multimedia audio device driver. I have a SBLive audio card installed and can not find the drivers anywhere. Any thought or suggestions for either or both issues would be greatly appreciated Gman |

Check the jumper settings on your hard drives, it sounds like you have them both set to master.

Not a hard drive issue
Thanks for the suggestion Morriswindgate, however I only have the 60gb installed. This problem is a secondary IDE issue.

DId you try switching the ide cables at the board? Make the cd/zip the master and the hd the slave?
change your bios boot up to A:, cd, zip, hd. see if it queries both the cd and the zip drive before boot up. (or don't plug in the hd, and let it give you the No op system found msg.) *I haven't done this since a 486. it may not work on a new machine!* BC |

Hi glelef,
Morriswindgate meant to check the jumpers on the CD-ROM and Zip Drive to make sure they aren't both set to the same setting. One has to be set to master and the other has to be set to slave. Cricket

If you are using an 80 wire cable on the secondary, you need to use cable select jumpering. The device in question might be the onboard audio which you need to disable in the BIOS if you are using a real sound card.

I have run into some situations where the Zip drive refused to work when on the same cable as some CD-Roms, if your jumpers are right, your only solution may be to separate them.

Issue 1resolved
Thanks everyone for you help. Silly me! It was a simple matter of missreading the jumper setting on the cd rom drive. When I went back for a recheck, I found the cd rom was on the slave jumper setting.
However, I am still having trouble finding drivers for my PCI multimedia drivers. Gman |

Open her up and find out what kind of Sound Card you have, we'll find the drivers for you if you tell us something about the card

The 'PCI Multimedia Audio Device' it is referring to IS your SBLive
If the SBLive is working fine then simply remove the 'PCI Multimedia Audio Device' from Device Manager and restart See what happens Jim |

Yeah, I personally would remove ALL traces of drivers for the card
Then turn the machine off. Pull out the card Turn the machine on, make sure nothing is found Turn off again, reinstall card then turn her on. Put in your SBLive CD and away you go |

fatboyjim, Tried removing the drivers and then the card. upon reboot, it is still looking for multimedia drivers. Tried to reinstall the card and all drivers install Ok with the exception of the multimedia. Is it possible that this driver is not associated with the sound card?

Thanks again everyone for your help. All issues resolved; board and system running just fine. By the way fatboyjim, Bailey reminded me that the mobo came with a cd and that is where I found the divers, imagine that!

Now you have 2 sound drivers installed - one for the SB Live and one for the onboard sound! Did you read my previous post in this thread?
