Why does my sound card screw up my VIDEO card EVERY TIME??!!!!
JEEZ!!!
My luck is amazing. I cannot get a sound card working without screwing up my video display. I'm on my 3rd card. Every time: I can get the sound to work, but as soon as it's up and running, my video display won't happen when I try to play a game. When I physically take the card OUT of the machine, boom. The video is fine. Now I know somebody has a solution for me. I'm assuming it's something with the IRQ's. But I'm not sure what to try. I've moved some things around to try to keep things alone. The sound card and video card aren't on the same IRQ, but they are sharing with other things. I was told that NO TWO things can share the same IRQ, but I don't know how that's possible. There's just too many things. I've attempted to remove my COM1 and COM2 from Device MGR, but when the computer restarted, it detected them again, and put them right back in the IRQ's. Do I have to get rid of them in the BIOS?? Please help me! I just want my sound to work while the video works. Thanks |

for some reason the sound card is trying to share the irq with the video card which is not a good thing...see if you can assign the slot that the sound card is in to another slot or try the card in another slot to see if it gets another irq assigned to it...

Yes you do have to disable the Com1 and Com2 ports in the BIOS. lol

Actually the Sound Card and Video card are NOT sharing the same IRQ, as I mentioned in the post. They are sharing IRQ's with other things, but they are far from each other. That's why I'm not even sure where to begin on it; because they aren't together, and I'm not sure what's actually causing the problem.
And about the COM ports, I did attempts to turn them off in the BIOS as well as the Device Mgr., but I didn't see anything in the BIOS to turn off. I guess I'll check again. Not sure why that was a "lol" |

Hi bumpinthenight,
You have to disable the COM ports (or Onboard Serial Port 1 & 2) in BIOS. While you're in there, check to see what PNP OS is set to. You want it to be set to NO. What sound card and video card are you trying to use together? What motherboard do you have? Which PCI slot is the sound card in? How many other device cards are in your PCI slots and what are they? Do you have more than 1 USB controller showing up in Device Manager? Do you need to them enabled? Have you tried visiting the video card and the sound card maker's websites to see if there are any known issues if you use this combination? Cricket

Under the Integrated Peripherals section in the BIOS make sure you scroll all the way down the menu on the left side. The disable On Board Serial Ports is at the bottom. Disable both of them if you can.
I am not sure that this is going to correct the problems you are having though, but it is worth a shot. Which OS are you using? |

The Operating System I am using is Win98 SE. The motherboard is an FIC VC11. The Video card is an ATI Rage 128 Xpert 2000 Pro. I have used various sound cards, in order to get sound working with the video card such as a Gina by Echo Event, and an Inland ALS 120. The current card that is in the machine is a Soundblaster 16 PCI. The Video card is in the AGP slot. The sound card is currently in PCI slot 2. I have tried it in various other slots. The only other card in my machine is a SCSI card in PCI slot 3. I CAN actually assign IRQ's manually to different PCI slots from the BIOS. I just don't know where to put what, because as it is, it really should be working. The video and sound card are in different IRQ's. Even when things switch around, they are always on different IRQ's.
The COM ports are now removed. That didn't help. When I looked in the BIOS for OS, the only thing I saw was "OS Select for DRAM > 64MB" and this was set to NON OS2, as opposed to OS2. A question I have is about something that pops up all over the IRQ channels: "ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering" This is on IRQ's 2,3,4,9,11. Is that right? should it be on 5 different IRQ's? I have gone to all the manufacturers of all the devices to make sure I'm using the current drivers, and have checked the tech info on conflicting devices and cards, and this issue is never addressed. So anyways, remember, I can always get the sound card to work, it's just that when I go to play any game, it doesn't switch the video display mode. And this is with ANY soundcard, and ANY game. The only consistent thing is the video card. But as soon as the soundcard comes out of the machine, boom. It works fine. I hope this helps and answers everybody's questions

I would put a different VIDEO card in - the Rage 128 Pro had a LOT of issues and is NOT a good gaming card. A Sounblaster 16 is probably the most compatible sound card in the world, so let's look at video as being the issue/cure.

Damn. I guess that card was wasted money. That really sucks. Usually when you buy something that's defective, you can take it back and apply that money towards another video card. But I'm past my 7 days.
What doesn't make sense is that the video card works. Just not when there is any sound card in the machine. I don't want to go to the store and spend $75 just to have the same problem again. Another issue I have thought of is Direct X. The version I have installed is 8.0, the latest version. There is a program you are supposed to be able to run from the RUN prompt called dxdiag that looks at your video/sound cards and tells you whether they're directX8.0 compatible. But that program just won't run for me. I don't know if my sound card is DirectX 8.0 compatible. It doesn't say in the manual at all. |
