Question CD ROM boot record?

When I boot my pc I get this message in the BIOS that states "the boot record for the CD ROM cannot be found".

I have to eject the CD tray for the system to go forward.

Any suggestions?

Hi rtbartlett,

Try removing the CD-ROM from Device Manager and then disconnect the IDE and power from the CD-ROM drive. Boot to Safe Mode and remove any entry for the CD-ROM in Device Manager there. Reboot to normal Windows and then shut down. Connect the IDE and power cables back to the CD-ROM drive and boot up again.

You might want to try clearing the CMOS too.

And you might want to try this...with the CD-ROM connected to your PC, restart in MS DOS mode and at the c:\Windows prompt, type in "cd \" (w/o the quote marks) and hit Enter. At the c: prompt, type in "fdisk /mbr" (w/o the quote marks) and hit Enter.

As this is my 1000th post I'd better make it a good one

Could it be that you have the CDROM set as the first boot device and it may be an old motherboard being a bit crazy about it

Yep - go into the bios and set it to boot from C before CD-Rom - and change it back if you ever DO need to boot from a CD.

Congrats on you 1000th post, fatboyjim !!!!

I'll go with you on this one; it sounds like the first boot device in BIOS to me also.
