Recommend a Router and HP Laser Printer
I'm helping a friend set up a network at home that used primarily for small business. He will be networking 3-4 pc's and would like to have all print to an HP Laser Printer. To avoid having one pc “host” the printer, I suggested a Router with printer server capabilities. So I would like recommendations of a Route/Print Serverr and HP Laser Jet (reasonably priced) that can stand alone on the network.

Something like the SMC Barricade will work well as it has it's own print server. I haven't seen one yet, but apparently Linksys has added a print server to their router as well.
As for a printer, well, I guess it all depends on what you want to spend. The HP 1000 and 1200 series are nice.

Where i work, we us a Jet direct box. its a box, that a lan cable plugs into and the Box has an IP address, and on that box has the LPT1 port, and it plugs into the printer. HP makes these.

I have a older SMC7004R Barricade with printer port and had trouble printing to it with my XP PC. Later models with firmware upgrades are probably OK, but here is a good place for support http://www.dslreports.com/forum/smc

Ron - as you prolly know, I am very partial to Linksys products, but their print servers are lousy. Suggest to your friend that he get a HP Laser Jet with a built-in Jet Direct card, they are the least hassles of anything. Use any router for the network that you are comfortable with.

Thanks for the info George, in that case, I might go with the same Netgear router I'm using as it's very easy to set up.

The HP LaserJet 1200n comes with an external single port Jet Direct print server, and sells for under $600. You can put cheaper printers on a 3rd party print server, but for reliability and ease of configuration you can't beat an HP on a HP Jet Direct.

The Jetdirect is an easy setup, so it is an ideal way to go, but the SMC Barricade is a no brainer as well. You essentially setup the printer on each machine as if it were actually connected to it, then run the SMC print server setup, change the printer port from LPT1 to SMC and you're done.

Hal - how big is the buffer in the SMC? I know the Jet Direct is 2 megs, but the Linksys is only 512k and that's the source of a lot of the problems with a Linksys.

I realize you probably don't need this level of router, but I have a d-link 713p wireless router with 3 10/100 ports and print server. I have 3 hard connections and a wireless connection with my laptop. Very sweet and easy to set up. Print server works well with my HP 722c.
