need help installing hard drive
hey guys, i had a WD 60GB 5400 rpm hard drive. but i've now upgraded to a brand new Seagate Barracuda 80GB 7200 rpm hard drive and a HP (made by IBM, seen in bios as an IBM and has IBM stickers) hard drive 30GB 7200 rpm on my computer. the Seagate is my primary hard drive and that's seen, i've formatted it, it's an NTFS partition. ok, i have WinXP and it sees the Seagate as my C: drive, but my IBM hard drive doesn't come up. i have them hooked up using a 80pin rounded ATA 100 cable and it's on cable select. i didn't format the IBM harddrive yet. i was going to do that once i had the OS reloaded. i was going to use the other hard drive solely for ghost images and important data. i was also going to format it as a FAT32 patition. but it's not seen. so what can i do to fix this. should i just go into DOS and format the IBM and hopefully check if it sees it? thanks for any help.

A dumb question: Are the disks properly recognized in the BIOS?

sorry, but what do you mean? it sees my Seagate as Primary Master and my IBM as Primary Slave, which it should be b/c that's how i have it set up on cable select and that's what i want. does anyone know what S.M.A.R.T. is for? i enabled it for both my hard drives. thanks.

Log in with administrative privileges, right click on My Computer, Manage, Disk management. Find the drive, right click on it, partition and format it.

I would make it a primary - but it doesnt really matter if you are just going to use the whole drive as a single partition.

i've installed the hard drive and now it's seen. it's a primary partition and i set it to active. should i have done that? b/c now when i go into GHOST it doesn't see the drive when it asks me where to save it to. it only sees A:, C:, and my burner. it sees it and lets me choose it when i choose which partition to GHOST but it doesn't let me save anything there. thanks.

Did you format it and assign it a drive letter?

nevermind, it works now. somehow, after i gave the partition a name (i named it "DATA" , before it was just "NEW VOLUME"), it worked and let me dump it after i got into GHOST. before it just saw my A:, C:, and Burner, i guess it couldn't see my original C: partition b/c it's in NTFS format, so it sees my D: partition as a C: in GHOST, makes any sense?. so i was finally able to get in and GHOST my drive. thanks for all the help everyone. i really appreciate it. thanks.
