DVD-ROM and HDD on same IDE?
I now have all my parts for my computer, and when I have assembled it I will post here to thank you all. My DVD-ROM is ATA 100 compatible, as is my Maxtor DiamondMax hard drive. Since my CD-RW is only ATA 33, should I put my DVD and hard drive on the same IDE controller? I only have a single hard drive. Thanks

Hi Furius92,
I'm not 100% sure but I thought I read on another thread here that using drives with two different ATA ratings could slow the faster drive down if they're on the same IDE cable. The DVD would possibly be okay since it's ATA 100 also, just be sure to put the HD as master and the DVD as the slave in that arrangement. Anyone else know if my first statement is true or if I imagined this?

Normally you would not want an optical drive on the same IDE as the harddrive. But since you have a cd burner, you do want that on a seperate IDE than the DVD. I plan to change my configuration to the same. I'm going to slave my DVD to the Hardrive on the Primary IDE. Then leave the CD/RW as a master on the secondary IDE. The only reason why I want to use this configuration is because itwill allow burning on the fly. Right not I have both optical drives on the same secondary IDE. And the hard drive is a lone master on the primary this has been working well but I want to see how it works the other way.

Hey, Furious92
When I set up the system I have now, out of mostly salvaged parts from my old ones, I put two hard drive2 on IDE 1, and a CDROM and a burner on IDE 2. Win98SE recognized all right away. HDD's are master and slave, and CDROM is master, CD-RW is slave. The CD-R works at it's highest speed,48X unless I am burning from it, then it drops down to the speed of the burner. I think I read the same threads Juppy read, and my experience bears it out. I have not set the CD-RW as master, so I do not know if that would automatically limit the speed of the CD-R whether both were running or not. Anyone else? |

I have my RW (master) with my 120LS ( slave) on IDE 2 & my HD (master) & DVD (slave) on IDE 1.
But because of my case configuration my HD is on the center connector & the DVD is on the end connector of an 80 wire. Every thing seems to run normal but am I asking for trouble on down the line? - Len |
