What is the best setup? SYS 7 WindowsXP 64-bit edition 6GB DDR RAM+ (or max possbile!) Custom ASUS Motherboard Dual Intel Xenon Proccessors 8 36GB SCIS Hard Drives Good? It needs to be good, If you know anything else I should get please tell me! Also whats the best router that allows at least 40+ computers hooked in at once and using the internet |

Also,
The store might need some staff who will get paid alot that can build computers so when the time comes, which 20 of you should I go to? Least: $12.46/hour Max: $18.96/hour You would have to be able to build at least 10 within 24 hours tho ![]() Can any of you guys do that When the time comes I'll post a message up here don't worry! |

What are exactly are you using this system for? Unless you're starting your own ISP or something I would say that it's a bit overkill. For 40+ systems you could go with a Dual Athlon or Xeon setup, 2GB RAM, and Intel or Asus motherboard, and a SCSI/RAID setup. As for the router, take a look at Cisco.

And for the OS, go with Windows 2000, Linux, or FreeBSD.

overkill?
i thought i'd need more i will buy some cisco routers then didnt think people like linksys would make something that holds 40+ people To basiclly test out internet, plus offer free internet access to my neighbhoor hood of 10+ people They'd be sharing a line that has 11 DS3's All plugged into this house/store up in my neighbhoor hood So I figure if they spread the word for me since they all love computers, they get free internet access on one big lan 20 people using it regularly 20 computers being tested that there nic is working when we build the computers That way they will have a very fast 200mb/sec line BTW: fiberoptics, which place could I get those at? I'm not using cat5, that cant handle the 200mb/sec and as promised, they will be getting full 200mb/sec+ Alot of there kids play online games, so I'm going to setup a computer server for there games. Is this computer good.. WindowsXP 64 bit edition Dual AMD Xeon's 2Ghz+ 4GB of Corsair DDR Ram Dual ATI Fire GL4 GFX Cards it will be running simultancy.. Counter Strike TribesII Half Life Unreal Tournament can it handle all those? really appreciate your guys help! Will post some pictures when all this is completed, don't worry

Oh, ok, you're setting up an internet cafe type thing for the store. I didn't get that from the first post.
For the games server, again go with FreeBSD or Linux, you don't need WinXP 64-bit. Intel makes the Xeons, AMD makes the Athlons, either of which you could use in a dual setup. For the Xeons you'll need RDRAM, and for the Athlons you'll need DDR. All you'll need is a cheap $30 ATI video card since it'll be a server. Hmm, dual AMD Xeons and dual graphics cards for a server? Me thinks you need to catch up on your own hardware info before you start building systems. I highy suggest starting small, make a simple server and a few net systems and see how it goes from there. These "super-computers" you listed are a huge investment.

heh sorry intel i mean
ok But freebsd or linux won't run half line.. it will run a tribes II server but a half life.. will it? will it run the games I said? and nah it's cool, I got tons of money up to $800,000 to spend so don't worry ![]() not internet cafe, The store will be in the upper culdasack.. when u go up the road it brances off one goes left and straight.. one goes straight and up at the top will be a store that curves around the culd a sack with parking in the back behind it. but there will be a router which each house in the neighborhood will recieve a fiber optic line to their house, they hook their computer in it and hop on my lan which is on a DS3 x 11 connection. Web surfing, AIM,ext all run fast. Now for the lan, they simply go connect to 192.168.0.1 or whatever and a special port which each game server runs on then they play against other kids in the neighborhood Overall, There are about 24 homes spread out in the HUGE neighbor hood, with about 2 kids each so 12 kids, have their choice of (just thought of this.. will still need a very good gaming server cause.. they need no lag!) monday night unreal tournamate and tuesday night counter strike (I should say day because it will alternate starting at midnight it runs xxx till midnight again then it runs a diffrent game called xxxx). on a pre set scheudule since there are 4 games, and 7 days each kid takes a vote at the end of the 4th day or sometime during the 4th day what they want to play tomorrow and ext every night until the reset, aka next week sunday/monday. get it? hope ya do! *whew* *wipes off sweat off his fingers* |

Let me get this straight: you want to wire your neighbourhood with fibre optic cable, provide fast internet access to your neighbours, provide a game server for your neighbours, all at no cost to them?

Dual AMD XP 2001+ Custom ASUS Motherboard 2GB of DDR RAM 72X CDROM 16-10-32 CD-RW w/ pack of 100 CD-RW's #-#-# DVD-RW w/ pack of 10 DVD-RW discs Dual ATI FIRE GL4 128MB DDR GFX CARD WindowsXP PRO Lian-Li Alluminum Case w/ Pre Installed Window & Neon Blue Lights Rounded Colored Cables,All The Goodies Pure Copper Heatsink For Each CPU All these kids are.. should I say geeks? geeks need the best to grow up to be the best.. right? ![]() So 12 of those computer configurations So kids, do you like those? homer15, if you were poor i would gladly pay or give you an account in our computer stores future ISP and send you one of those machines, but your not poor cause you already have the internet. Neither is anybody here, so haha.. lol We're setting to open in 1 week, So at the end of tonight I go into major worktime and start building these computers and getting them out to the kids and setting up the store I will post a message in one week, looking for staff - alex |

BTW it includes 4 SCIS drives in each computer Still deciding 90GB+ probaly 4 90GB+ SCIS drives + means like dont know 9# whatever i dont hate poor people, but it has to suck to be poor |

I think you're going on extreme overkill. most games you play aren't going to use half of the computer resources you have setup.

Uhh, just a thought, but since those things are gonna need massive cooling, they are going to LOUD and inside of MASSIVE cases. Don't you think you could tone it down a bit just to save on space and noise?
Also, if you're spending $700,000 on a server, why not make it an Itanium machine? They cost $8000 just for the CPU itself. But damn, that's a really kickass thing you are doing for these kids. These will be the best computers they've EVER dreamed of and will ever use for a long time. Dual ATI Fire cards... damn! I am amazed!

I'm sorry but this entire thing sounds like a huge load of bulls**t to me. The fact that a 14 yr old kid is gonna get a $4.2 million bank account to do with whatever he wants speaks a lot about how well Grandpa spent his money. Maybe he worked for Enron.
This sounds like a pipedream to me. Personally, I could think of a lot of other things to do with that kinda $. And, if this scenario is true, it goes to show that just because you are rich does not make you smart. |

i never said i was smart
nor did i ever say i had access to it all Its all in a bank account, all transactions (all these have been) need to be approved before I am allowed to go and get it,ext Grandpa was sharp, until he died of pega`ris`tic cancer. He didnt work for enron, tho.. if he did and was alive now.. i'd be goofey eyed lol BTW shecky whats up with your systems.. technically they are but i thought it was for computers only Itaniums,eh? Maybe I will build PCMECH a server off dual itaniums with really sweet stuff if they sponsor my store i think i could gain mod or adminship pretty dang fast if I did them that good of a favor AND paid for it all and hosted it on its own DS3 x 2 lines |

It won't be loud,
it has a good sound reducing material thats currently being designed.. So when it's released in on Wednesday, I'll start doing the machines I think I'm gonna overclock all my machines By at least .4 so if its 1.2 it'll be 1.6ghz ext - alex |

Howdy,
If you want a "balls to the wall" screamer I suggest you look into a Dualie P4-Xenon system. Drop any idea of Micky$oft anything and use a Linux variant of some sort. Drop any idea of IDE and go SCSI-LVD or a "JBOD" FC array. The system should sport a minimum of 512MB of memory and be accutely aware of memory performance which the P4 still holds the fastest performance. Focus on 64bit PCI for any SCSI/RAID controller. For 80 grand this can be EASILY done (8+). Also keep in mind that Micky$oft uses multiple CPUs in a serialized fashion and UNIX/Linuz uses a parallel fashion. The serial fashion is a "flow over" type design where once CPU-A is fully occupied, CPU-B comes into the picture and not before. In the parallel fashion, both (all) CPUs are used concurrently and the sum of the 2 represents "one". (this is oversimplified)

hey, while this thing does seem a bit unlikely, where exactly in VA do you live? i'd love to get payed to mess around with computers, that'd be sweet.

ok if any of you believed him asfter his "I'm 14" post, you're crazy. I mean come on.... no adult would authorize this kind of BS spending. I wouldn't do such a stupid thing anyway. I just wish I had the 3000 bucks to pay for the rest of what I owe on this semester of school so I can register for the fall semesters classes on Friday.
