Does ANYBODY know how to get the Astra Umax 6400 (Firewire) scanner to work under WinXP.
I've tried installing per instructions. I've tried installed the latest drivers from Umax.com. I've tried going to Microsoft.com support/knowledge base and all it says is to remove the WIA drivers but it doesn't tell you how. After I install everything, the scanner light comes on, it starts making "start up" sounds, and then waits. When I click on SCANNER TEST it responds with SCANNER ACCESS FAIL. HELP!! Open VistaScan, and uncheck the "Auto Adjust" box. For some reason, that crashes the software if I have it checked under 2k, did the same thing, scanner got stuck at "warming up". Maybe it is the same under XP.

Hi, Jenni, thanks for replying.
When I try to start VistaScan it goes directly into SEARCHING UMAX SCANNER... the it finally spits out UMAX SCANNER TEST PROGRAM Which, of course, brings me back to the SCANNER ACCESS FAIL. Any other ideas? |

Did you try this?
http://www.umax.com/support/knowledg...rds=Astra+6400 And did you download the 2 part VistaScan software they recommend? BTW, all eight of those files they show on their support site DO NOT show up in the driver details section of my system, but the scanner works just fine. The only 2 mine shows are the 1394bus.sys and the ochi1394.sys files. Last edited by Jenni; 04-18-2002 at 08:30 PM. |

Sorry. I feel partly responsible, because I'm the one that recommended the scanner, but I don't have XP, so I didn't know it was such a pain with XP.

I appreciate that, but HEY, it's a learning experience so don't feel bad.
Hopefully, other members who may read this thread can avoid the experience entirely. Peace, |

WELL,
I returned it and bough the MICROTECH 4800 (USB) and it is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the old dinosaur I was using! It used to take over 90 seconds to scan a 300dpi full color photo but now it never takes more than 20 seconds. |

Well, I've never actually timed it, but Umax claims the 6400 will do an 8.5" x 11" full color 300 DPI scan in 24 seconds.
I know it is really fast though. |

WOW.
Whelp, I JUST did a full page, full color, 300dpi scan with this 4800 and it took 45 seconds. That means that it's definately NOT as fast as the 6400.... .........but it DOES work. ![]() In any case, that is still SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the dinosaur I had before! |

WELL,
WEEKS later, I get a response from Umax. Here is how the scanner is supposed to work with WinXP. Quote:
