Solution to No Sound Device Recognized
Hi All
I am posting this information in the hope that it could help some poor sole, unfortunate enough to find himself/herself in the same situation in which I found myself a few weeks ago. It’s a long post, but could be a worth the time if you’re in trouble. Most of my posts have been requests for help, and this group has provided it. For the first time, I feel that I have something to contribute to the group. The posts listed below describe the history of the problem. Here is the simple solution. In [boot] section, have drivers=mmsystem.dll In [Drivers] section, have ... aux=mmsystem.dll mixer=mmsystem.dll midi=mmsystem.dll wav=mmsystem.dll Palladrj Posts------------------------------ About a month ago, I installed the ATI Radeon 7500 All In Wonder Video card. It has been working well viewing with the TV option, recording MPEG 2 to the HDD, and playing back with the Player option. Recently I tried to enable sounds for my applications, and found that I had no sound. I went to Start-CP-Sound and MultiMedia, and had no sound card option to select. There is an external cable connection from the Radeon card to the sound card, which I assume is used for the sound for the TV. I don’t know if the Radeon has anything to do with the loss of the sound card. Could the sound card be using a function for the Radeon, and not working independently? Next Radeon problem is with the DVD Player. When I try to play DVD I get an error that says that I don’t have a sound card, enough storage, and one other, which I don’t think has anything to do with this. Bottom line: no sound option available in Sound and MultiMedia window, no sound at all for the system- wav, Midi, etc. Radeon works well with TV, but not with Playback or DVD Player. About a month ago, I purchased ATI AIW 7500 video card for video capture and recording (saving to HDD). TV and playback with Player worked fine, and I was a happy camper. I then upgraded system memory from 128MB to 512MB and installed a 24X CD-RW. After power-up, TV function worked, but playback did not. In Control Panel, Sound&MultiMedia, there were no preferred devices listed under Audio and Voice tabs. Since I disabled sound in my applications, I wasn't aware of loosing the sound. I thought it might have been something that I had done in the h/w installation, so I restored the system to previous h/w configuration. Powered-up, same problem, no sound card recognized. Thinking that it was the integrated sound chip, I purchased a Creation Soundblaster 16 PCI. To make a long story even longer, it doesn't work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers and sound drivers, downloaded upgraded drivers for both, and I'm lost. I disabled the integrated sound in the BIOS prior to installing the sound drivers. I'm thinking about removing the video and sound cards and replacing with the originals, as well as replacing the memory with the 128MB. I would appreciate any suggestions in localizing this problem. I've reached the limit of my knowledge, and I'm lost. I have no sound card recognized in Sound & Multimedia. I reloaded drivers; I downloaded drivers, but no help. I also restored the drivers using the Sony Restore disk, no help. I installed Soundblaster 16, thinking that it was the card, and disabled the on-board SoundMax in the BIOS, but still no sound. In order to test the h/w, I removed the Soundblaster, and replaced the HDD with a spare, and installed WinME. The sound card was recognized and sound was available. I’m thinking that if I use the fresh WinME with sound, I’ll need to reinstall all the other s/w that I’ve installed over the year (is this correct?). Is there a way to locate a corrupted file associated with sound? Since I play with video and audio, this is likely to recur. I would, therefore, prefer to find the corrupted file. |
