Hello all,
For the past week I had been recieving a strange message when I boot up my PC. It was from the "Trend Chip Away Virus" program (a program already running on my machine when I started work at my present job but never noticed it till now). It stated that there was a virus on my boot disk. I continued booting and choose not to log onto the network to keep any problems to my local machine. I than ran a complete scan on the boot disk and it came up clean. I then went to scan a second hard disk and it was not there. I opened up the case and examined the internals and noticed that the hard disks were exremly hot. This is probably to the mounting which does not allow for easy airflow between the disks. I removed both and allowed them to cool. I later installed the master hard disk and all seemed fine. I then rigged the second hard disk to achieve better airflow and all seems fine. Can anyone tell me if too hot of a hard disk can cause this strange occurance? -RC |

Hi aekdb12,
I've never ran into the identical problem you described, but, yes, any device that overheats will / can cause problems. I assume they are IDE drives?? If so, they normally run under a 100'F. SCSI can run about 120 - 130'F. Separating them for good airflow was a wise decision. My guess that, as the drives were running hot, that the connector for the 2nd HD may have lost connection, and removing / reinstalling the connector may have fixed the problem. TwoRails |
