burned my ram chip !
hi,
don't ask me why, I burned a ram chip... maybe it wasn't seated properly? 1 gold finger was totally black, burned and smelled like ... heh lost 110$ I went to the store and they will propably exchange it for nothing, but who knows Thanks Dim3x |

It could have just been a manufacturing defect, I've had that happen before. Also, on older first generation Pentium motherboards, some had a jumper for the RAM voltage depending on whether you were using EDO or SDRAM (others would autodetect). If you didn't set the jumper, you crammed too much voltage through the SDRAM and fried it.

the problem is it was working! I bought this chip last year! It was working great.
today I wanted to switch 1 ram chip to my old comp. So I took off my 64mo from DIMM1, took off my 256 from DIMM2, put my 256 on DIMM1, then started my comp. but it did a sound so I shut it down. the ram stick was so hot, i removed it and re-placed it (i thought it was not completly seated). when I started it the second time... it smelled very bad! so now I have my 64 mo stick in DIMM2, because I don't know if DIMM1 is damaged... So it's probably not a manufacturing problem... Thanks Dim3x (I have an Asus TUSL2-C and I don't think it has a voltage jumper for the ram. anyway, it was working without changing anything... I still think it wasn't seated properly.) |

Was power completley turned off to the system?
ATX will keep power going to motherboard,unless the switch on the PS is turned off or the system is unplugged. I've heard this happen when such a scenario was in place. Memory installed with ATX still powered and memory fried. |
