Installing External CD Burner (USB)

Hello everyone,

I recently did a clean install of XP on my daughters PC and on mine. her PC has an internal CD burner (Acer) and mine uses an external HP burner about three years old that attaches to a USB port.

I've installed new burning software (Nero) on both machines. Her burner works perfectly but my PC does not recognize the burner when it is attached. I don't see an icon for it or anything. It worked fine with Windows 98 but there must be something else I need to do. Even though its an older model I would really like to get this external burner to work.

Thanks for any help.

Did you recently do anything with your bios settings? Make sure that your USB ports aren't disabled in the bios. If you can try a different USB cable, you could give that a try also.

When you plug the USB cable in, does XP recognize new hardware and at least install it as a CD drive visible in My Computer? If this much is happening, Nero should recognize it.

I checked into it further over the weekend and tried installing the HP software that I have on their CD. It installed OK, but after rebooting it still doesn't recognize the CD burner.

I looked in the device manager and the device is shown but it says it has no drivers. I went into "install new hardware" and got it to look for drivers on the HP CD, but it doesn't find them there. I think the original HP drivers must have been on a floppy and I'm looking for that. If I can't find it what do I need to do to get the drivers?

Ok, I went to the HP website. For my burner, the 8200e there is a CD titled CD-Writer Installation Disc for USB Products- Windows XP. I ordered it and when it arrives I will post with results.

I downloaded the CD Writer USB Drivers but it looks like that update is for Windows 98, ME and 2000 only. I will use it on my work PC since that runs 98SE.

My 2 cents
That is without a doubt a driver issue. Sounds like when you purchased the cd-burner it was made for OS's prior to XP. Therefore their drivers probably won't work. So like you did you could order the new cd or simply download the drivers for that drive for the XP OS I'm sure your problems would have or will be solved.

Just my 2cents.

Yep, since I went to XP I'm having lots of these driver related issues. Just yesterday I got home from Pittsburgh with lots of photos taken with my digital camera, but was unable to view them because the I needed new drivers from Fujifilm. I have them downlaoded to a floppy and will install them when I get home tonight.
