DVD drive not recognizing cds

my dvd drive is not recognizing the type of cds im putting in. for instance I put in a dvd cd and when i clicked on my d drive to play the movie it just shows 2 folders, one called AUDIO_TS and the other called VIDEO_TS. Before i had this problem i was able to play my dvds by just clicking on the dvd drive but now instead I get these two folders. also, if i take the dvd out of the drive right now and put in another cd or dvd the drive doesn't recognize the cd or dvd. it still says that the dvd cd i originally put in there, is still there. not sure what is wrong with my dvd drive. the file i have attached to this message is what my dvd drive always says as the title with those numbers (020102_1501). the only way i can get rid of those numbers, and for my drive to read another cd, is to restart the computer. any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi bhome83,

Are the jumpers set correctly on the drives connected to that IDE cable? Are you using the master/slave setting or the CS setting?

Try going into Device Manager (or whatever it is they use in WinXP), remove the DVD entry and reboot.

What software are you using to view DVD movies?

Is the DVD the master on that channel? Have you tried switching it with the CD-RW?

Have you tried that DVD in another PC yet?

Try hitting F5 after you swap out disks from the DVD (that refreshes Windows...are you waiting long enough for the drive to initialize the new disk?).

thanks for reply. yes the jumpers are set correctly, because i used to not have this problem. the jumpers are set to cable select with the cdrw on the slave and and dvd drive on the master. i use powerdvd xp to play dvds but i have this problem with any cd i put into the drive. whether it be a music cd, game cd, dvd cd etc. the drive doesn't read it correctly. for instance i just put a dvd into my dvd drive and when i clicked on the drive letter it doesn't play the movie but rather opens the drive and shows two folders. this happens for every dvd. before i had this problem i could just click on the dvd drive and the movie would play. i will do your suggestions and see what happens. thanks.

Those numbers tell me that you are using burned CD's - and they may not have been recorded and closed properly. Does the drive exhibit the same problems with commercial pressed CD's and DVD's?

no, the numbers that are shown in the attachment are for one of my dvd's I put in my dvd drive. before i had this problem i didn't have the numbers, but rather it just said the name of the dvd in the drive and when i clicked on the drive the dvd played.

020102_1501 is a burned CD volume label - it's the date and time it was recorded. THIS is the "numbers" I was referring to. It's possible that this particular CD was recorded improperly, this is what I'm trying to say. Have you scanned for viruses?

im not using recorded cds, im using dvds. though i think i did get confused because you're right about the numbers being for recorded cds. but im still having the problem where when i put my dvd into my dvd drive and then click on the drive to play the movie it just opens the drive and shows two folders. ill post an attachment here to better explain.

now my problem is even worse. I just burned a data cd with ez cd creator, and when it was done the cdrw didn't read the cd at all. I then put the cd into my dvd drive and that drive didn't read the cd either. I click on the dvd drive and it just says " please insert a disk into drive d:" Why won't my cdrw and dvd rom recognize the cds i put into the drives? I can probably restart my computer and the cd will be recognized in the drive, but i don't want to have to do this each time i use a cd. Not sure how I acquired this problem. Any ideas on this? im using windows xp professional. Thanks.
