Angry Fire Sound Cards With ME

OK.. I dont understand why I cant get a sound card to work in a windows ME system. I went into safe mode to remove the card.. Went back into normal mode and installed it. Didnt work.. The sound card is good because I installed it in another machine. Then I tool another sound card and tried to install it. Asound to be exact. Still no luck.. Whe I tried to play a windows sound.. It gives me a message that the sound card may be in use. So I went back into safe mode removed the sound card items again.. Rebooted into normal mode installed the Asound card and still nothing... What am I doing wrong.. I HATE WINDOWS ME...

ONE OTHER THING>>>. THE SYSTEM HAS A NEW SHUTTLE SLOT A ATHLON BOARD IN IT.. THE Previous board blew up.. Before I put the new board in I went into safe mode and removed everything out of device manager. The installed the new board... Everything else works.. JUST NO SOUND.... PLEASE HELP...

Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian,

Does the motherboard have onboard sound as well? If so, did you disable it in the BIOS?

In device manager remove the sound card shut down then move the card to another slot then start up then it should be detected complete the installation process. Moving it to another slot should solve the problem. Also be sure not to install this card in the slot right next to the AGP slot since this slot shares recources with the AGP.

Hi bds66,

This isn't a direct answer to you Q, but I also disliked ME. I took it off and put Win 98SE back on. Ahhhhh, much better.....

I assume you're using the setup file to install the sound card, what happens instead of using the setup file, you go to device manager, click on update driver, and direct it to the necessary files?

There's nothing wrong with Windows ME, if you like 98, ME shoudln't be any different with the exception of being a bit snappier than Win98.

If these boards have onboard sound make sure you disable it in the bios. Also switch PNP OS to no in the bios.
It's not the OS your obviuosly doing something wrong.

I've been running ME on my family system for almost two years now. No reloading the system, nothing stable as a rock. I have used two different sound cards the old one went south. This system takes everything my family throws at it.
Be advised there usually are different drivers for the ME OS than for win98.

AMD Athlon k7 800 MHZ
Tyan trinity
Win ME

And about ten other computers. You name it I built it.

Highrisemech.

I guess out of 4 systems that I have worked on with ME installed I have had no good luck with them. As far as me doing something wrong hardware wise...NO...

Reason why: I had another HD sitting around so I installed Windows ME from scratch... Used the same drivers that I was using with the old HD.... Installed... rebooted and all is well...

I believe that when the board was upgraded it caused something to go wacky with the OS... I am sorry if you were offended by me Saying me sucks.... but that is just the way I feel about that OS.

This computer has to be back tomorrow so I cant very well mess with it anymore.. I am going to have to try and recreate the instance..I have build alot of computers also... ranging from 95 to XP...I would pick XP Pro and 2000 Pro over any OS...

Sorry if it sounded that way but sincerly I was not offended.
Most people when they run into issues the first thing they tend to blame is the OS. But this is usually not the case. It could be the chipset or a corrupted file or other.
