Is DMA enabled? Does the burner still read cd's?

GLC, whn i try to enable dma after reboot it is unchecked. Device Manager says Device is working and there are no conflicts. Settings are Disconnect and Auto Insert Notification - During boot Cdrom is found. I am thinking that the fatal error created some type of file block... but I have no idea how to reset it if its possible - tried scanning disk to no avail? Is there some dos commands to run chks for cdrom? or clean up those fatal error crashes? Tried cleaning the cdrom but it can't be accessed? Thanks

In my bios I can chge auto to modes 1-4 for cdrom. I know udma66 is mode4 cause that is what my harddrive is but I am not sure what modes 1-3 designate... so i chnge both cdrom and cdrw to mode1 thought its safe. cdrw is atapi but i think cdrom is ide cdrom. cdrw is always activated first. Can you clarify the mode values designation? cdrom is ide1 and cdrw is ide2 ea set as masters. Maybe one requires real mode driver and the other atapi a diff type of drv (not sure what it means was reading it in microsoft trbl shooting db... but the cdrom was working before. hmmm

Does the burner still read CD's? Have you tried swapping the drives to each other's channels?

Burner is working fine. GLC here is what i printed out from c:\windows\command\EBD
OM device name assigned..$ >>>* CD-ROM device name is over 8 characters..$ >>>*Medium is porbably changed $ >>>*SCSI Inquiry command failed $ >>>*SCSI Read Capacity command failed $ *Request Sense command failed Test Unit Ready command failed Read command failed Seek command failed Mode Select command failed Set Address Format command failed *CD Address out of bound CD Pause command failed Play command failed SCSI Read SubChannel command failed CD Resume command failed Eject command failed Unlock command failed CD ResetSCSI Device Failed I got the above while trying to find out if there is only one mscdex drv. So can it be that the pextor cdrw is using same driver can it be that E:\ cdrw took over the mscdex.com I have nothing in config.sys or autoexec.bat with cdrom lines? Can anyone understand abouve. thanks Tifkat |

Please try swapping the burner and the reader to each other's channels and verifying correct jumper settings to determine whether the problem is with the DRIVE or the COMPUTER before you go tearing everything apart. Always start with the simplest troubleshooting procedure, it's very possible that the drive itself has failed! This is not a driver issue if you have no real mode drivers in config.sys or autoexec.bat. Before swapping the drive channels, boot to safe mode and remove all CD drives from device manager.

K GLC, switched ide cables and removed cdwr software. First I tried cdrom alone on ide1, still came up D:\ is not accessible The device is not ready! Then I plugged the cdrw into ide2. I can read off of E:\cdrw. Cdrom still not accessible and device not ready message is displayed.
Someone said the fatal error loading software off of D:\ could have cause a decalibration of the cdrom. Can that be checked and or fixed? |

Replace the CD drive - it's shot. I/O Magic isn't exactly a quality manufacturer. If what you think is true (I can't confirm or deny that theory) it will cost more to fix it than a new drive would cost, new name brand drives are less than $30 shipped from Newegg. If the drive is still on warranty, RMA it.
If you still want more proof, try the drive in another computer. |

Any standard IDE/ATAPI cd-rom drive should be Linux compatible as far as I know........
Newegg has the 52x Sony for $24 plus $6 shipping. Cough up another 2 bucks and you can get an Asus. |
