PC Card or USB Disc drive?

Hello,

Just got a new laptop at home, but it did not come with a disc drive of any sort. I'm considering a DVD+RW drive or at least a CD-RW drive, but am unsure whether a PC Card version or USB version will be better in terms of performance/reliability.

Also, will either drives(PC Card or USB) be bootable? There are only excess PC card slots and USB 1.0 ports on the notebook.

Get yourself the Microsolutions Triple Play Backpack CDRW. It has USB (upgradable to USB 2.0), PCMCIA, and parallel connections.

Thanks Hal, it looks pretty much what i need. One last question though, is it bootable? Like if i need to run the recovery cd for some reason or another...

You can also look at the portable PlexWriters.

www.plextor.com

Plextor burners are high quality, unfortunately they have only USB2.0 devices, no firewire ones. . . unline the DVD+RW drive manufacturers:

For an external DVD+R/+RW drive, I'd say either HP dvd200e (USB 2.0 / Firewire) or Sony DRX-120L (Firewire).
There are currently 6 models out there. You can see them here:

Unfortunately, my notebook only has USB 1 ports and a PC card slot... so they all don't apply..

Looks like i'll be looking at the PC card drives..
