COM port with modem problems

My Athlon 1.4 (runnining WinXP) suddenly crashed (restarted) while I have various applications opened (internet browsing, downloading, opened tv-tuner). This occured when I tried to turn off the tv-tuner software. The CPU load was light so I doubt that it's due to overheating and such.
When it restarted, COM2 (where the modem, an external SupraExpress 56 Diamond) and the modem doesn't seem to be working well (no dial tone, etc.). I switched the modem to COM1. It worked, but when I dialed, the ISP responded but my modem didn't really reply to the ISP so an extended modem noise occured which resulted to a dropped modem call.

Sorry for the poor explanation but this is the best I could explain the mess that I've gotten myself into.

I'm not that worried with the modem but I'm afraid that COM2 died for some reason. Now I replaced it with an older USR Sportster Voice 33.6 Faxmodem, it works well with COM1.

Also, when WinXP suddenly crashed lots of problems happened when I ran Norton Windoctor. It has all these link problems and other errors.

I don't think that this is a PSU (I have a 300 watt) problem as well because I had this machine running for 6 months with no power related problems.

How can I fix this problem? Would a clean installation of WinXP fix this? I'm really hoping that this is just a software problem. Thank you for your time.

Although it could easily be a problem in your software environment. If you did not make any changes there, you may want to check your hardware. Check your cpu fan and temps also
IMHO I think your problems may stem from the ECS board with the SIS chipset you are running. I think you would be better served running that K7 processor on an Abit board since they seem to be more stable.

When you switched the modem to Com 1, did you adjust the port settings to 115200, 8, none, 1, hardware?

Just a note - I have found that Windoctor can cause more problems than it can allegedly cure.
