ok i am having a problem with a modem(factory gateway modem). i went to fix this guys computer(gateway) because he couldnt connect to the internet. he is using aol, and when it tries to connect to get access numbers, the dial-tone goes on for too long and then it says that it cant establish a connection. so i reinstall, update and whatever, and nothin happened. so i got him a new modem(broadxent(made by creative) v.92 pci voice modem), thinking it was a problem with the modem itself. so i install it and it wont connect. i look at the settings and it installed it in COM3, and i dont know why it didnt install on COM1. so i delete all files that werent uninstalled while taking out the other modem, and still nothing happens. this was a newer computer i guess, since he had nothing on it besides aol. so i start thinking that there are settings for the old modem that i dont know about or how to change/remove them. so i format the c drive, reinstall everything, and STILL nothing. i called tech support for the modem, but they didnt seem to know what was going on, since he asked me if i was kidding him when i told him what happened. so im stumped, any ideas/suggestions?
thanks |

COM 1 or COM 3 it does not make any difference. Have you tried dialing up to a different ISP, or dialing up from a different location? Could be a bad phone line.

ok i didnt think COM1 or COM3 made a difference. we tried using a couple different phone cords, but that didnt work. i dont have any access numbers to any different ISP's at the moment, but im gonna try to get one somehow. but i tried just to make a phone call using phone-dialer, but i did the same thing.

Go to the site below and do some of the troubleshooting. Lots of times with a modem all you need is to move it to another slot.
