I have a hard drive with bad clusters. I had no problems with them before since I have already marked them using scandisk. BUT, recently I have started to write CD's and it seems that when ever i do, there is a funny error. I think the data stream stops because the buffer goes slowly to zero %.
When I defrag, i can see the a few bad clusters (about 10) around a certain area. However, whenever any software including defrag tries to access the good cluster between them, the system slows down and I hear a loud squeaking noise. (Sounds like "neeeee...")(This also happens when writing cds). Scandisk seems to read/write a bunch of clusters at a time, whenever it a bad cluster is in that group, it does the funny stuff. Eventually, after a few seconds, all is well; the sound dissapears and the systems returns to normal speed. Those clusters are then read/written. Basically, writting/reading the clusters between the current bad clusters cause the system to slow and the harddrive to make funny sounds. They generally can be read/written on, but cause the buffer to underrun when writting a CD. Does anyone know any software to mark the clusters bad? I want mark all the clusters between the current bad clusters bad. I want to be able to write a CD without buffer underrunning. Now, whenever I write a CD, i defrag and hope that the defrag P.S. Still using WIN95

Your drive is bad and is only going to get worse. Marked or not, it's going to have trouble when the drive reads around those areas. Time for a new drive.

If your Hdrive is no longer under Warranty period, sometimes LOW LEVEL FORMAT helps. Try going to your HDrive Mfr and get their Utility. Back up your important data first before you do the Formatting.

Yep, a wipe of the drive may bring back a drive that just has junk data stuck on. If it is a mechanical failure, it is doomed.

I would tend to think like Hal,Id be in the market for a new drive-and ghost it over, pretty soon.If a low level format helps it out, well you can always use it for storage of non important programming-IMHO

Bad clusters/sectors are the same as if your hard disk has cancer, it is terminal as it wll just spread, and you do not know how long it will last. Therefore the drive is useless for saving anything.

I have a few drives that got this cancer, and after a wipe, they are still running after months or years. What do ya have to lose?
