old drive in new computer
i've been posting about this previously and for some reason i'm still a little confused. i've been told how to transfer the contents of the old drive in my current computer to the new drive in the new computer. but i'm still confused about how to put the old drive into the new computer permanently. the old drive is running windows 98se and the new one will be running xp. what do i do to install the old drive and get rid of 98?

Hi AmericanBiznatch,
Your new computer will be running WinXP off the new hard drive and you want to install the old hard drive (with Win98) into the new computer along with the new hard drive (running WinXP) and you want Win98 removed from the old hard drive? Do you want to transfer just personal data files or programs to the new hard drive? You can only transfer personal data files over, programs have to be installed in order to work with the OS. You can't transfer installed programs. Set the old hard drive to CS (cable select) and connect it to the grey IDE connector (the middle one) and power up the system. Go into BIOS and make sure the old hard drive is recognized by the BIOS. Exit the BIOS and boot up to Windows. Use Windows Explorer to transfer your personal data files from the old hard drive to the new one. Once that's done, you can then format the entire old hard drive (to get rid of Win98) and then continue to use it for data storage. Cricket

Do you have the full version of Microsoft Office installed on you old hard drive or the Works version with Microsoft Word? If you just need Word, then you may want to consider just purchasing Microsoft Works 2002 that has Word 2002 included in it. It runs around $60 or so for the OEM version.

Hi AmericanBiznatch,
WinXP comes with a very basic word processor built in to it, but you'll have to purchase the rest (MS Office) if you want them on your new computer. Do you have any program CD's that came with your old PC? You may qualify for the upgrade version of Office (instead of having to purchase the full version) if you have Word or another Microsoft productivity software on CD. But if your computer only came with restore CD's, I think you'll have to purchase the full version of whatever software you want. Cricket
