The build your own guide from PCMech is one of the best. You should do fine if you follow all of those steps. Make sure you research what you want, and what parts will get you there. Ask questions as needed! Good luck, and welcome to PC Mech

The best way we can help you is if you decide 1) If you are going for an Intel or AMD based computer and 2) how much money you want to spend. Then we can help you with all sorts of things without getting into arguments amongst ourselves which will result in your thread getting closed If you give us that information, there will be no end to the information you will recieve from us.

Hi PTLFFRTY,

Welcome to PC Mech!

Putting a computer together really isn't very hard to do. It actually takes more time to decide what parts you want to use in your build and finding out if they'll all get along or not than it takes to build it.

There have been many folks who've come by who were in the same boat as you (building their first) and they've all been able to build a computer successfully by reading the Build Your Own PC tutorial and a little help from the forum members (mostly during the post-build portion where they're trying to troubleshoot a problem).

One thing I like to stress is to not skimp on the motherboard or powersupply (actually, try not to skimp on anything if possible...don't get generic parts) as these parts are very important in order to have a good, stable system.

Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions (it's a good way to learn).

Hi,

I'd get the LiteOn 40x burner instead of the LiteOn 32x.
Reason: LiteOn 40x burner supports Mt. Rainier. LiteOn 32x doesn't, and Mt. Rainier can not be added to non-Mt.Rainier-capable drives. Either the drive supports Mt.Rainier out of the box or it will never support it.
Seems that Mt. Rainier is not enabled in the 40x, though, but the Mt. Rainier necessary hardware is included as far as I know.

Hi PTLFFRTY,

Your parts selection looks really good. If you're a gamer, you may want to look at the GeForce based video cards.

Take some time to read the Build Your Own PC tutorial here and try to find a few others on the net. Preparation prior to starting is important. When you do start your build, don't let your excitement get the better of you...take your time and double check your work.

Learn about static precautions and know that whenever the power supply is plugged into a wall outlet, there is power going to the motherboard. Always work on your PC with it unplugged from the wall or with the power supply on/off switch on the back switched off (not all power supplies have this though).

Have fun.

I just finished my first build with a lot of help from pcmech, also if you are trying this for the first time I would not spend a lot on my first one olny because if something goes horribly wrong (not saying it will or trying to scare you,but it won't hurt so bad money wise. Still go for a good quility board from places like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com.

My first build I used an older board Shuttle AI61 slotA with a 700mhz processor, and fan $79.00 tigerdirect.com.
Enlight / Mid with 300w power model#72370x3c4 $44.00 newegg.com
Pine nvidia tnt2 M64 32mb AGP video card $36.99 tigerdirect.com Crystal 4281 2 channel 3D PCI sound Card w/ SPDIF $12.99 tigerdirect.com HD,CD-Burner,DVD,2x128mb SDRAM all from a older system. the newer stuff with shipping cost $231.98. you could get all the othe stuff real cheap I'm guessing for around $150 more, but what ever you decide we will always be glade to help with any questions you have with your build. Good Luck
