What do I need to do to watch TV on my PC monitor?

PC monitors have good image quality compared to my old Sony TV Screen. I always wanted to watch TV on my Monitor. Is there a way? What do I need to buy to hook it up together.

You need some sort of TV tuner added to the system. The most popular being the ATI All-in-Wonder cards or the Hauppauge TV tuners. Personally, I like the ATI All-in-Wonder units (personal preference, I wouldn't say one is really better than the other) and I currently have an All-in-Wonder 8Mb in my small system and an All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500 64Mb in my main system. The 7500 even comes equipped with remote control which I probably won't use until I get my computer wired to my home entertainment system downstairs. Since it uses a RF remote, I will be able to control my computer from downstairs to control my DVD and MP3's.

The Hauppauge units are add in cards or USB devices that can be used with your existing video card. ATI makes add on units as well.

I agree with HAL. The ATI series is very good for this kind of thing. You can even set it up to be a digital VCR, which is handy if you can't be around to watch your show. They also come with "patch" cords, so you can hook up any video device (RCA and S-Video plugs) to it. You can even TV out with the all in wonders, so you can record back to a VCR if you want.

Of course, there are those that will disagree and say the "right" way to do it is with a true video capture card, and seperate tuner. However, if you want to do it the easy, inexpensive way, go with an ATI or Hauppage.

if you don't want to spend a lot of money, you can just get the actual tuner itself, which you can get for like 30 bucks at best buy.

Oh c'mon, the image you're getting on a monitor should from TV should NOT be any different than the regular windows you're seeing, It's the same video mode. There is no way watching tv on the pc screen can burn monitors. I think your friend made his monitor display screen at the refresh setting not supported by monitor, so that's why it burnt.

I've used a tuner for years and a couple of my friends do the same.

There is no way it can damage the monitor. Tunguyen, there have to be other reasons for the monitor failing.

Sorry, Tungyen, that is nearing an impossibility with todays monitors.

Maybe you should look at something else. No way in hell is that the problem with your buddy's monitor problems.

Hmm, so is it true that you can burn up a TV monitor quickly by using it as a PC monitor, or would the refresh rate just have to be set pretty slow?

Would a TV-wonder card have any colflicts with my video card?

Before I consider that, how could I go about getting a signal for my TV and CBM from the same line, without dropping the frequency too low for my CBM to work?

No that's not true. Whatever happend to Tunguyend's friend, it has nothing to do with tv tuner. As I said, I myself have used a tv tuner for a long time and alot of my friends do, and no monitors burned.

Technically it doesn't even make sense. There is no reason why it should happen. All the monitor does is displaying a picture that comes from the graphics card. Whatever the content is doesn't matter at all.

Roger that, RJ.

BTW, I should say something about the clarity of TV on a PC. It's still the same resolution, so it isn't any clearer. However, it LOOKS clearer because you are watching it in a smaller window.
