Temp readings...

Hey i have an MSI motherboard with an athlon xp1700.The cpu has the retail fan with thermal compound and the MB is the kt3ultra. (below is a link) http://www.msicomputer.com./product/...c/KT3Ultra.htm

The BIOS for the MB comes with a temp reader that will auto warn and shutoff at a certain TEMP.
Should i enable this feature? and if so at what temp (celsius) should i set the cut off ?

Lastly im relying on the utility that came with my MB to tell me the temp until i install a front panel reader..my temps have been around 50 C avg. whats an optimal range ?

(no overclocking )

Hi KINGOFOOTBALL33,

That temp is okay, but could be lower.

Does your case have any fans installed? Are you cables and wires bundled up nicely to the side away from the CPU?

Is the heatsink installed properly? Is it sitting flat and level on the CPU core? Is the recessed part of the heatsink over the raised part of the socket?

Did you use Artic Silver? If you did, you'll see the temps drop a bit after a few days.

Set the temp alarm to 65C.

The newer BIOS Versions have both a warning and a shutdown. I enable both to the maximum settings which are way below the danger point.

hey thanks for all the responses.....
i dont use arctic silver i used a thermal compound from cooler master.... now that it's no longer 85 degrees and 8999% humidity in my room i can get a more accurate measure... i avg now around 44-47 with the 47 coming during warm days playing quake...
i went to my bios and set the temp warning at 65 like you suggested .. im not sure what version since i didnt check last time i was in there but i updated everything last week..
im planning on installing a front drive bay which gives me front usb and fire wire.. it also comes with a temp reading at the front.. does anyone know how accurate this would be ?
its made by enermax...

Hi KINGOFOOTBALL33,

Those temps are much better now. Ambient room temperature will effect case and CPU temps quite a bit.

I haven't tried those temperature probe things before (I really don't concern myself with CPU or system temps much), but I think it would be handy if you're overclocking. As far as accuracy goes, it probably won't be balls-on accurate but it should give you a good idea of how rapidly the CPU temps can rise and an idea of the difference between idle and full load conditions.
