AMD Retail warranty and HS / fan info!!

Hi All,

There has been a lot of threads concerning buying an AMD CPU retail version (versus OEM) to get the 3 year warranty, and then using something like Artic Silver, or even installing a different HS / fan combo.

Since the warranty does not allow for "alterations," I said I'd contact AMD to find out if / how the above will affect the warranty. Well, after numerious attempts, I finally got thru, and recieved an answer.

My Questions to AMD were:

Quote:
I have two questions about your PIB warranty:

1) If the heat sink needs to be removed and something like Arctic Silver is used, does this void the warranty?

2) If the heat sink is replaced with a different or larger, but still an AMD recommend heat sink / fan combo, does this void the warranty?
Their terse response was:

Quote:
The answer to both questions is "Yes".
I replied with asking what happens if the mobo is replaced. If / when I get the answer, I post it.

I must have a special way with them then. I have sent two burned xps to them and got two new ones back, but I go thru a third party.

Oh no, I just noticed you are almost to 1337 posts!!

Usually AMD is pretty good about replacing cpus, the rule of thumb is,if the cpu fails due to nothing you did, return it,if you screwed up,take the loss!

Send a message via ICQ to HackinCowboy
I've fried several AMD's before and each time I've sent them back with no problem. If you physically damnage the cpu then they won't all you to send it back. Also, with your question about putting Arctic Silver on, most likely they won't be able to tell that you removed their cheap compound and put on the good stuff. If you do ever fry it then just wipe it off before you send it back.

My suspicions about the word "alterations" are right on!!

Here is / was my followup queston:

Quote:
I am unclear, however, to question 1 below. If I had to change my motherboard (such as in a defective board) or simply upgrade my motherboard, the heat sink / fan combo has to be removed. How is it reinstalled to keep the PIB warranty in full effect?
(note: see question one above, not below.)

And here is their response:

Quote:
Reinstalling the heatsync will not void your warranty. But if you use any thermal solution that is different from what it originally came with, then that will be altering the original product.
So I guess going thru the third party is the real solution !!!!

AND reusing the "old" thermal pad is, since it is recommended, OK !!
