Dual boot, how do I start each OS in safe mode ?

Dual OS, how do I boot ME into safe mode ?
Could somebody please help me with this.
HDD IBM 40 gig
C: drive = WinME
D: drive = XP
When I start up I get the menu where I choose which OS to start. At the bottom of the menu it says press F8 for troubleshooting. OK, press F8 and various options come up. At the top of the menu it lists Windows XP & Microsoft Windows below it. (at the bottom of the menu it now shows safe mode) If I press enter on Windows XP, XP boots into safe mode. Fine, but if I press enter on Microsoft Windows (ME) the system does a normal startup. What’s up ? How do I boot ME into safe mode. ? I tried on selecting ME to immediately press SHIFT or F8 like when ME or 98 is the only OS, but system still starts normal mode.
Really appreciate some help GLC ?
Sorry, if this in the wrong forum.

Have you tried holding down the CTRL key instead of shift key when booting ME normally.

You may want to try choosing ME to boot into and as soon as you do,hold down the f8 key, just do it quickly!

This has come up quite a few times about dual-boot systems.

When in Me, go to Start>Run> and type "msconfig"
Click the Advanced button
Tick the "Enable startup menu"
Now when you boot into Me you will get the Startup Menu where you can choose Safe Mode.
