Changing mobo. Suggestions plz
OK, next friday I will swap the mobo. Since I will be unable to post for help, I'm asking now what should I do in order to make my experience a pleasant one.
What should I do before removing this actual mobo? What should I do after putting in the new one? TIA

For your Win98, make sure you have the .CAB files installed on the C:\ drive as you won't have access to your CD-Rom during the upgrade after you delete the ENUM key in the registry as posted in the tips and tricks section.
I have done a couple motherboard replacements with XP and have just let XP do it's thing and so far, they have upgraded without incident (although in one instance, XP needed re-activation). |

Just one question (I wanna be sure I understood how to do the ENUM trick): Must I delete the ENUM before removing my actual mobo?

Hi Nuclear Krusader,
You can either remove the ENUM key before you take out your current motherboard or you can install the new motherboard and boot to Win98 Safe Mode and delete the ENUM key there. Cricket

My advice for Win9x would be to get the OS and mobo drivers installed with the bare minimum (CPU, video card, and Ram) and then add one device and drivers at a time.
This will allow you to make sure that each device is working properly before installing the next one. You can then sort out any problems as you go. If you just shove everything in to begin with, then it's much harder to identify and sort out problems. |
