I just ordered my 600 Duron processor, my Asus A7V MB no sound, with dip switches, and a Golden ORB fan for the Duron Sockat A, not a socket 7 or 370.
I plan on overclocking this to about 900 if I am luckly. going by the Memory guide at http://overclockin.com/reviews/MemMa...tested-400.gif My siemens 128 pc-100 looks like it runs stable at cas3 just above 145, so on cas 3, i should be able to get it at pc-133 right.? Any advise, from Alfie or anyone is very welcome...

Byte, which Gorb did you get...you need to get the Chrome Orb, it has the square base on it so it doesn't crush the die on the cpu, i accidently ordered the socket a golden orb, which has the new clip but circular base, it isn't really recommended to use on the socket a cpu. AS for oc'ing the speed of the ram, i'd say go for it, i dunno how stable its going to be, i went ahead and bought crucial 133 ram for my A7V board, i didn't want to screw around with that. But good luck oc'ing the duron.

Figarowas right,byte
Although the Golden Orb has a modified clip, the force needed to get it on has crushed many a Duron.(mine included) The Chrome orb has a more powerful fan and a specially designed bottom (2 pads to cushion the cpu slug)and is the only orb reccommended for Socket A. It,too is hard to get on,if you decide to use the Golden orb,try not to put it on as a normal heatsink. It's adviseable to put it on outside the case, try to connect both sides at the same time,if you connect one side then the other a teetering effect takes place and its this motion that crushes the cpu slug. Personally,I can't reccommend either. Of the heatsinks that I've tried,TiaSol is excellent and the Alpha pal6035 is tops so far. With the Alpha I average about 40c,the TiaSol averaged about 43c. I've ordered a bigger TiaSol,which I plan to solder a sterling silver plate to. Will report on the cooling capabilities of that! The memory you have should do fine, the Asus defaults to 100mhz,on the dipswitches on board leave these on (100mhz fsb) In bios change the memory to 133cas2 and see if it boots,if not change to cas3 and try it. Good luck! |
