Exclamation Major 3rd RAM, is it okay???

I was trying to order a Kingston 512 MB DDR333 RAM stick. However those sticks where out of stock. They offered me an alternative which is supposed to be an A-brand (a good brand). What they offer is "Major 3rd 512 MB DDR333 CL2.5 RAM", according to te new pricelist they faxed me.
Can somebody tell me if this is a good brand or should I stay with Kingston. I'm not sure if it are 2 sticks (cause I prefer 1 stick) and if it is DDR333 (actually they call it PC333 in the price list). And what I don't understand is, what that CL2.5 means?

Can somebody help me out whether to buy this RAM or not, or just give me a comment on this RAM from Major 3rd (I never heard of it btw)??

I always like to know the brand of RAM I'm buying. I wouldn't recommend buying an unknown brand. CL2.5 refers to basically the time it takes to process the first bit of data. The difference between CL2 and CL2.5 is only 4 billionths of a second. So you should be fine with either.

Hi PilotinCommand,

Never heard of that brand before.

Try to find out who the actual chip maker is. If it's Samsung, Infineon or Micron modules it should work fine. But make sure you can return it if it doesn't agree with your system.

Yes,

It's common in Scotland to be offered Grade "A" or "Major" Ram in PC shops. It's supposed to high-quality unbranded Ram; but as Cricket has said, ask them who makes the chips. They should be able to tell you. Sometimes it can be a well-known quality chip-maker.

I may be wrong, but I think the practice allows some chip companies to off-load suplus stock without affecting their "branded" prices.

If they can't tell you who the chip manufacturer is, then forget it and order some Crucial.

That is not a brand (Major 3rd Ram) - they are just saying that a leading manufacture made the chips on the memory stick. Presumably this would be Micron, Samsung, Infineon or Toshiba. They will not guarantee which brand you will receive (at least online) - just that they will be what they consider a major manufactor of memory chips. And just because it has chips made by a leading manufacture doesn't mean the pcb they are put them on is good quality.

It would be much better to just go with a quality *known* brand such as Crucial(micron), Samsung, or Infineon - then you know for sure it will be compatible and reliable.

Also - be patient with your threads as members will respond to them.

Kingston is a good alternative or not? Sorry, I was in a bit off a rush. Won't happen again.

Yes, kingston is also a decent brand. I have used them a few times without any problems.

I personally don't care what brand my ram is. If it works great and has a warranty, I am satisfied. I have no clue what brand ram is in my system right now. It's fast and does what I expect it to do, really fast. Kingston isn't the only company that makes good ram. I've learned to venture out and try other companies to see how they are. If they're good, I buy stock before anyone else does.

Just out of interest, here is how a couple of dealers grade the Ram they have to offer.

Dealer 1.

MAJOR BRAND MEANING: MICRON, NEC , TOSHIBA, HYUNDAI, INFENON, SAMSUNG, GOLDSTAR ETC... DEPENDING ON AVAILABILITY !

Dealer 2.

Market Grade - Generic - Basic
LD, SMT,ACT, or Similar

Major Brand - Standard - Better
Hyundai, Mitsibishi, Vanguard, or Similar

Precision Brand - Best
Toshiba, Samsung, Infineon, or Similar

Toshiba is a very common "Major" Ram in the UK.

Interesting, isn't it?

However, you have no guarantee all that all dealers play by the same rules. Therefore, I would still order some good quality Crucial. It's really not that much more expensive. Treat yourself and go for one of the best.

www.crucial.com

In the UK, they strive for next day delivery. I would be suprised if it's terribly much longer even in the US.
